Just like Alice, we're taking a deep dive.... into Lake Mungo!
Presented in the pseudo-documentary format with elements of found footage and docufiction, it is Anderson's only film. It follows a family trying to come to terms with the loss of their daughter Alice (Talia Zucker) after she drowns and the potentially supernatural events they experience after it.
Lake Mungo premiered at the Sydney Film Festival on 18 June 2008, and was screened at the American South by Southwest film festival in March 2009. It received positive reviews from critics and has gained a cult following since its release, being included by IndieWire in "Top 15 Best Found Footage Movies", and ranked by Variety as the most terrifying found footage film although we beg to differ.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 71% of 77 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.3/10. The website's consensus reads: "Tapping into anxieties latent in an era of weight loss drugs, Saccharine's insights into nuanced themes come with a lot of empty calories but its gross-out scares sure do hit the spot."
Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 62 out of 100, based on 12 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.
Francis's lead performance received praise from critics. The Hollywood Reporter wrote that her "commitment to the central role is so unfaltering that she makes the script's rough patches less of a deal-breaker", while Tomris Laffly of RogerEbert.com described Francis as "extraordinary".

Join BP, Coop and Justin as we do a deep dive review of the 2025 Norwegian satirical, black comedy, body horror film 'The Ugly Stepsister' (Den Stygge Stesøsteren), written and directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, in her feature film directorial debut.
An international production mostly in Norwegian, it is loosely based on the 19th century fairytale "Aschenputtel" by the Brothers Grimm, itself a retelling of the French fairy tale "Cinderella"; unlike most versions of the stories revolving around Cinderella, it focuses instead on one of her stepsisters who embarks on a grueling quest to capture the heart of a handsome prince. It stars Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Ane Dahl Torp and Flo Fagerli.
The film had its world premiere as the opening film of the Midnight section of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on 23 January. It was also screened at the Panorama section of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival on 16 February. It was theatrically released in Norway on 7 March by Scanbox Entertainment, in Denmark on 28 May, and in Sweden on 13 June.
It was nominated for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Award at the 98th Academy Awards.

Backrooms is a 2026 American science fiction psychological horror film directed and co-scored by Kane Parsons in his feature-length directorial debut, and written by Will Soodik. It is a theatrical addition to Parsons' web series and was inspired by the "Backrooms" creepypasta. In the film, Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a furniture store owner, and Mary (Renate Reinsve), his therapist, discover a dimension of seemingly endless liminal spaces accessed through the store's basement. Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell also star.
After uploading the web series in January 2022, Parsons was approached by several studios about potentially adapting his series into a feature film. In February 2023, it was officially announced that work had begun on a film adaptation of the Backrooms based on Parsons' videos, with him also directing. Roberto Patino was initially set to write the screenplay, but was replaced by Soodik. Filming began in the summer of 2025 and concluded in August 2025.
Backrooms premiered at the Aero Theatre in Los Angeles on May 7, 2026, and was theatrically released in the United States by A24 on May 29. The film received positive reviews from critics and has grossed $350 million worldwide, becoming A24's highest-grossing film to date and making Parsons the youngest filmmaker to reach number one at the United States box office. Backrooms is the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2026 and the second-highest-grossing horror film of 2026.

Scary Movie (colloquially known as Scary Movie 6) is a 2026 American parody film directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans, and Rick Alvarez.
It is the sixth installment in the Scary Movie film series, following Scary Movie 5 (2013), and has been referred to as the spiritual sequel to the first two films.
It stars Marlon, Shawn, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall. The plot follows Cindy Campbell and her friends Ray Wilkins and siblings Shorty and Brenda Meeks reunited when the same masked killer from the first film resurfaces.

It (also known as Stephen King's IT) is a 1990 ABC two-part psychological horror drama miniseries directed by Tommy Lee Wallace and adapted by Lawrence D. Cohen from Stephen King's 1986 novel of the same name.
The story revolves around a predatory monster that can transform itself into its prey's worst fears to devour them, allowing it to exploit the phobias of its victims. It mostly takes the humanoid form of Pennywise, an evil clown.
Cast members included Tim Curry (Pennywise), Richard Thomas, Annette O'Toole, John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Jonathan Brandis, Tim Reid, Dennis Christopher, and others. Produced by Green/Epstein Productions, It was filmed over a period of three months in Vancouver, British Columbia, in mid-1990 with a budget of $12 million, double the usual television budget.

A critical and commercial success, the film set box office records and grossed over $704 million worldwide, becoming the third-highest-grossing R-rated film at the time of its release, and grossed over $719 million through subsequent re-releases. Unadjusted for inflation, it became the highest-grossing horror film of all time.

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema announced The Nun, a spin-off film to The Conjuring 2, which had opened five days earlier, with Peter Safran and Wan producing.
The film's initial script was by David Leslie Johnson. Hardy had signed on to direct The Nun with a new screenplay by Wan and Dauberman.

I'm here to take you through the entire plot, trailer, posters and all the missed opportunities.
Undertone is a 2025 Canadian supernatural horror film written and directed by Ian Tuason, in his directorial debut.
The film stars Nina Kiri as Evy, a woman who hosts a paranormal podcast with her friend Justin (Adam DiMarco), where she is the skeptic to his believer.
After Evy moves back home to become the caregiver to her dying mother (Michèle Duquet), she and Justin are sent recordings of a married couple (Keana Lyn Bastidas and Jeff Yung) experiencing paranormal noises in their home, drawing Evy into fear and paranoia.
Evy and her mother are the only characters to be shown on-screen in the film. All other characters are heard as off-screen voices, thus conveying the film's horror through its sound design.
Undertone premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 27, 2025, and was theatrically released in the United States by A24 on March 13, 2026, and by VVS Films in Canada.
The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing $20 million against a budget of $500,000.
The film was inspired in part by Tuason caring for his parents in the early 2020s as they faced terminal cancer.
It began as a radio play before evolving into a film screenplay that incorporated some of Tuason's own experiences, and was shot in his own childhood home.
The film was shot in February 2025 with production taking place in Rexdale, a neighbourhood in Toronto, Canada.
Tuason said, "I'm relying entirely on the audience to make that up in their own head. Because I thought about hiding stuff like Mike Flanagan does. But then I watched The Babadook, and I just saw a jacket hanging on an old rack, and I said, 'That's enough. I won't do anything. I'll just hang a jacket on a chair.'"

15. Primate
Remember the opening scene of NOPE with the monkey? Well this is pretty much a full length movie inspired by that. This has received positive reviews which is surprising given that this movie is being released in the dumpster month aka January.
14. We Bury the Dead
I did a no spoiler review of this so I’ll keep it short. We Bury the Dead is an Australian filmed zombie survival horror flick. I gave this a positive review so add this to your list if you’re a fan of zombie horror.
13. Whistle
The director of The Nun Corin Hardy is back, this time with a horror flick focused on the aztec death whistle.
12. Dooba Dooba
Found footage is back! Dooba Dooba follows Amna, an awkward 16 year old babysitter as she arrives for what she assumes will be a typical babysitting gig. She realizes she’s very mistaken when she learns that Monroe, the girl she’s babysitting, is not only sixteen, but suffers from severe anxiety after having watched her brother get murdered when she was a child.
11. Send Help
Rachel McAdams aka Regina George is back! This time she plays Linda Liddle, a mistreated woman who endures the day to day misery of her sexist boss Bradley but the situation changes when a plane crash strands them on a deserted island in a desperate fight for survival. Oh and did I mentioned this is directed by Sam Raimi?
You'll have to watch or listen to the episode to find out the Top 10 upcoming horror movies.
At this stage, there are still no firm release dates previously announced horror sequels including Thanksgiving 2, Smile 3, Final Destination 7 and Paranormal Activity 8. The same goes for previously announced films that were then delayed but are now being rebooted like SAW and The Exorcist.

Home Alone meets Jigsaw Kramer in this wild sleigh ride that will keep you on your toes. So hang the stockings and the paint cans — and don't forget to lock the doors.
7. Krampus
Toni Collette fans rejoice! She is yet in another horror movie and fans of Trick R Treat will feel right at home for the holidays with this twisted tale, which goes to show that there are true terrors in this world that are more frightening than forced family gatherings.
6. Jack Frost
This cult classic tells the tale of a serial killer who is transformed into a murderous snowman when his prison transport collides with a genetics truck full of experimental lab acid. Complete with frozen performances, politically incorrect humour and witty one-liners, it's the exact kind of ridiculousness you'd expect from a low-budget '90s holiday horror film.
5. Silent Night, Deadly Night
Between ominous animatronics and irresistibly exaggerated '80s acting, Silent Night, Deadly Night's yuletide kills do not disappoint, featuring a hanging by holiday lights, decapitation via sleigh ride, and impalement by a reindeer (okay, a taxidermied stag, but still).
4. Black Christmas (2006)
Bring those pitchforks out, I know this is a hugely unpopular opinion but I love love love this movie, it’s so bad, it’s good plus you all know my main girl Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe is in this so I have to stan my queen.

It's just been nominated for an impressive 18 AACTA Awards and today, BP, Coop and Justin analyse the glowing hit Australia horror film of the year!
Bring Her Back is a 2025 Australian supernatural folk horror film directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the former of whom co-wrote the screenplay with Bill Hinzman.
It stars Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, and Sally Hawkins. The film follows two step-siblings who find themselves orphaned and placed in the middle of an occult ritual by their new foster mother.
Bring Her Back was theatrically released by Sony Pictures Releasing International in Australia on 29 May 2025. The film received positive reviews, with Hawkins's performance being highlighted for praise, and grossed $39.1 million on a budget of $15 million.

After the critical and commercial success of his film Barbarian (2022), Cregger began working on a spec script titled Weapons, and after entering the market in January 2023, the script prompted a bidding war between several studios, with New Line Cinema emerging as the victor. Casting initially ran from May to July of that year before several actors dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, which was a result of production delays during the 2023 Hollywood labour disputes.
Nevertheless, casting resumed in February 2024 and ended that May, when filming began in Atlanta, and wrapped that July. Cregger auctioned the rights to the film's script for $38 million.
Weapons was released in theatres in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on August 8, 2025. The film received positive reviews and grossed $265 million worldwide.

Trivia
Plans for a fourth film in the franchise started back in the early 2000s with an attempt at creating a 'wilderness' adventure slasher, this was abandoned and followed by the supernatural themed 'I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer' in 2006.
In 2014, Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard signed on to write a reboot with no connection to the previous installments. However, this version ultimately fell through. Following the cancellation of the 2021 television series adaptation, the project was relaunched when Robinson pitched her version to Sony Pictures.
The film was put into early development in February 2023, with producer Neal H. Moritz returning. Prinze Jr. and Hewitt were confirmed to be returning in 2024, with the new cast members joining throughout the year.
Filming took place between October 2024 and March 2025 in New South Wales and Los Angeles.

Many horror fans have either watched or heard of the Urban Legend film from 1998 but did you know there were two sequels produced in 2000 and 2005?
Join BP, Coop and Justin as we analyse each movie and discuss the use of urban legends in film, Slenderman, modern day horror folklore and yes we even shine a light on the attempted Urban Legend reboot from 2020 that would've explored AI and deepfake technology.
Urban Legend (1998) was directed by Jamie Blanks, written by Silvio Horta, and starred Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart, Tara Reid, and Michael Rosenbaum, and was the first installment in the Urban Legend film series. Its plot focuses on a series of murders on the campus of a private New England university, all of which appear to be modelled after popular urban legends. In addition to its younger cast, the film features supporting performances from Robert Englund, Danielle Harris, Loretta Devine, John Neville, Natasha Gregson Wagner, and Brad Dourif.
Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000) was directed by John Ottman in his directorial debut, and starred Jennifer Morrison, Matthew Davis, Hart Bochner, Joseph Lawrence, Anthony Anderson, and Loretta Devine. It is the second installment in the Urban Legend film series and follows a film student being stalked by a serial killer in a fencing mask, who begins murdering the crew members of her thesis film about urban legends.
Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005) is a direct-to-video supernatural slasher film directed by Mary Lambert, and starred Kate Mara, Robert Vito, Tina Lifford, Ed Marinaro and Lillith Fields. It is the third and final installment in the Urban Legend film series, although it is almost entirely unrelated to both of the films that came before it, using supernatural elements instead of a whodunit formula. The film follows three high school students who inadvertently summon the ghost of a dead high-school girl, who starts coming after her old classmates
.In April 2025, it was announced that a new reboot was in development by Screen Gems, with Shanrah Wakefield writing the script. Gary Dauberman and Neal H. Moritz are set to produce, with the story aiming to be "an examination of what an urban legend looks like in a post-digital world."

Following the critical success of Wilde's feature directorial debut Booksmart (2019), a multi-studio bidding war took place for her second film, with New Line Cinema eventually winning.
Pugh joined the cast in April 2020, with Styles added that September, replacing Shia LaBeouf after production had already begun. Filming took place in Los Angeles from October 2020 to February 2021.
The film was the subject of media attention and controversy, including conflicting reports regarding the circumstances of LaBeouf's departure and alleged conflicts between Wilde and Pugh.
Don't Worry Darling premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 23 by Warner Bros. Pictures. It received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $87.6 million.

Critical response
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 24% of 104 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.1/10.
The website's consensus reads: "Imaginary's core concept is solid enough to produce a handful of scares, but too much of its potential is lost in a clichéd story that gets bogged down in world-building."Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 34 out of 100, based on 21 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable" reviews.
Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C+" on an A+ to F scale, while those polled by PostTrak gave it an 57% overall positive score.

Release and Critical Reception
Released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer through MGM/UA Entertainment Co. on June 4, 1982, Poltergeist was a major critical and commercial success, becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film of 1982.
In the years since its release, the film has been recognized as a horror classic. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, named by the Chicago Film Critics Association as the 20th-scariest film ever made.
Steven Spielberg involvement
Accounts differ as to the level of Spielberg's involvement, but it is clear that he was frequently on set during filming and exerted significant creative control. For that reason, some have said that Spielberg should be considered the film's co-director or even main director, though both Spielberg and Hooper have disputed this.
Sequels and Remake
The film was followed by Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Poltergeist III (1988), as well as a 2015 remake, but none had the critical success of the original.
The Poltergeist Curse
The Poltergeist franchise is believed by some to be cursed due to the premature deaths of several people associated with the film (including Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne), a notion that was the focus of an E! True Hollywood Story. Poltergeist was also featured on Season 1, episode 3 of Cursed Films.
Popular Culture
"Bad Dream House", the first segment of "Treehouse of Horror", the first episode of the annual The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials, is partly a parody of Poltergeist.
Spice Girls pays homage to the film in their 1997 music video for the song "Too Much".
The Family Guy episode "Petergeist", Peter Griffin discovers an Indian burial ground when he attempts to build a multiplex in a backyard. When he takes an Indian chief's skull, a poltergeist invades the Griffins' home. The episode used some of the same musical cues heard in the film and recreates several of its scenes.
American Dad! also parodied the film with the season 10 episode "Poltergasm", in which the Smith house has become haunted by Francine's unsatisfied sex drive, and Roger plays Ruby Zeldastein, a parody of Tangina.
The 2001 comedy horror film Scary Movie 2 parodies the movie's clown doll attack in Robbie's bedroom, as well as Diane's levitation.

It also features Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, and Raúl Castillo, as well as Kyle Gallner reprising his role from the first film.
Smile 2 was released theatrically in the United States on October 18, 2024. Like its predecessor, the film received positive reviews from critics, and grossed over $124 million worldwide.

In March 2023, following the commercial success of Smile, Finn signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures to develop additional horror projects. In the following April 2024, a sequel to Smile had entered pre-production, with Finn returning as writer and director. Principal photography took place in early 2024 in New York.
In October 2024, Finn described the film as "an exploration of the downfall of this pop star who's unable to overcome the things that have been put upon her." He added, "What I love about the ending of this film is that I wanted to create this meta-feeling moment, where the audience in the arena is staring through the screen at the audience in the movie theater. I wanted to raise the question: Did we do this to Skye? By us coming back for a Smile 2, have we done this to her? It's all intriguing to me, this idea of 'are we complicit in this?'"
The film received positive reviews from critics, who said it was an improvement over the first film and praised Naomi Scott's performance.
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 86% of 184 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.9/10. It follows a fading celebrity (Demi Moore) who uses a black market drug that creates a much younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley) with unexpected side effects.
An international co-production between France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the film had its world premiere on 19 May 2024 at the 77th Cannes Film Festival main competition, where Fargeat won Best Screenplay.
It was released theatrically in the United Kingdom and the United States by Mubi on 20 September, and is scheduled for release in France by Metropolitan Filmexport on 6 November.
The film received positive reviews and grossed over $42 million on a $17.5 million production budget.

Fargeat explained that her motivation for creating The Substance came from personal experiences with body image and societal pressure. She began writing the film in her 40s, a period when she was confronting negative thoughts about her relevance and appearance. "I really started to think and hide these voices in my head like, 'Now your life is over. No one is going to care about you.'
In another interview, she expanded on her thoughts: "I couldn't say that I experienced it in a real way in my life, but those thoughts were absolutely real in my brain."
Fargeat decided that the main character should be an actress to explore societal perceptions of bodies. She also chose to have Elisabeth Sparkle host an aerobics class, inspired by Jane Fonda's transition from a successful actress to her second career producing exercise tapes.
Fargeat wrote the 150-page script with minimal dialogue, dedicating a mere 20 pages to spoken lines and focusing instead on detailed visual descriptions, rhythm and sound. This approach made images and sound the primary "grammar" of the film, in place of dialogue.
The birth scene was the first that Fargeat wrote, which she describes as "the most important scene of the film". She had the idea while in the shower. Fargeat chose to omit character backstories, instead conveying information through actions, locations, and attire.
Colours were written into the script to symbolize character traits – Elisabeth Sparkle's yellow jacket representing a "superhero-like" quality before her transformation, and Sue's pink leotard signifying her femininity.
