Jesus came to bring the kingdom to all people. Jesus moves beyond the borders of Israel to reach others to show that his kingdom will extend to the ends of the earth. Our assumptions will be regularly challenged as the gospel spreads to the most unlikely places and people. Are we ready?

Our real problem is the sinful decisions that come out of heart that separate us from God. The pharisees developed a system of rules that focused on externals. But Jesus confronts the Pharisees and the crowd, as he explains to hisdisciples that what’s inside the human heart is the real problem. Until we acknowledge the root of the problem, we won’t be ready to receive Jesus and His kingdom.

Jesus empowers his disciples to assist him in bringing his kingdom to other people. The disciples see their Lord rejected in his hometown just before he sends them out to bring his kingdom to others. And then John the Baptist is beheaded. Jesus turns his attention to his disciples through the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000 to show them his shepherd heart for the lost and that he is empowering them to do his work. Without him they can do nothing!

We receive from Jesus all we need through faith. Both the girl and women were healed/saved through faith. It’s by faith that we are saved and please God (Eph 2; Heb 11).

Jesus has absolute authority over the frightening physical (storm) and spiritual realm of darkness (demons).Those who witness Jesus’ power are overcome with fear. But Jesus uses his authority in love. In the hands of someone else, this authority would be a destructive force. But Jesus always uses his power in love. So, we can trust him.

The kingdom of heaven grows.A series of parables through which Jesus promises that his kingdom will grow.

Jesus’ true family is comprised of his followers who seek to do his will.

Misunderstandings and accusations about Jesus are flying around. His family think he’s crazy. The Pharisees think he’s Beelzebul! But in this midst of all this chaos, Jesus’ disciples believe he’s worthy of following and commit to doing his will. Jesus defines his true family (v34-36) and explains why a person misses out (v28-30).

Only Jesus has authority to give true rest.Two back-to-back stories reveal Jesus as the true Lord of the Sabbath. The Jews had created many religious rules to protect rest but keeping all these rules was hard work that gave no rest. Jesus shows he has authority over every moment in our lives and for this reason as we trust in him, we can experience true rest.

The King’s followers are those transformed from the inside out by God’s grace and power.The pharisees were disgusted by the kind of people that flocked to Jesus. In their eyes, Jesus was a defective leader who could never be a true king. Unlike the Pharisees who tried to patch up sinful lives with powerless religion, Jesus transformed sinners from the inside out by changing their desires.

Jesus has authority to forgive sins, our fundamental problem.Despite all our physical, emotional, and relational problems, our fundamental need is forgiveness of sins and peace with God. The four friends had to overcome obstacles to bring their friend to Jesus. What obstacles do we face as we come to Jesus?

Jesus lived in constant communion with his Father.A special sermon for our Week of Prayer in which we look at the prayer life of Jesus.

Wherever Jesus exerts his authority, He brings his kingdom to earth.Jesus said the kingdom of God had come near. When people heard Jesus teach or saw his miracles they were amazed at his authority – to teach, over diseases and demons. In what part of our lives do we need Jesus to exert his authority?

Being a disciple of Jesus means you are completed devoted to him.Four people chose to follow Jesus. If you haven’t, what would it take? Those who did follow all had to leave something behind. What would you need to leave to follow Jesus? Following is very different to just liking Jesus.

Jesus is the good news of God’s promised and anointed king.This claim is supported by three witnesses – John Baptist as the last of the OT prophets, the Father’s voice from heaven, and Jesus’ own testimony. The gospel is not good advice but good news about a person – Jesus, who’s come to establish the Kingdom of Heaven.
