O Happy Fault: Resurrection and Daily Conversion by Brendon Boone

O Happy Fault: Resurrection and Daily Conversion by Brendon Boone

The first Tuesday of April 2026 was on the Tuesday in the Octave of Easter and we featured Brendon Boone, a convert and altar server (Thurifer) at St. John Henry Newman Catholic Church in Irvine.

Easter marks the end of the penitential season of Lent and at the Easter Vigil, the catechumens are received into the Church. What is it like having to make a decision to convert and become a Catholic? What can cradle Catholics learn from converts? What is the significance of a 2,000 year old event in our daily lives?

The Liturgical Year: Redeeming a Sacred Rhythm by Fr. Glenn Baaten

For March, we featured a conversation on the liturgical year between our director, Louie Calma, and Fr. Glenn Baaten, the pastor of St. John Henry Newman Catholic Church in Irvine and chaplain of Santiago Retreat Center in Silverado.

In this conversation, we briefly looked back on Fr. Glenn's pastoral journey into the Catholic Church before discussing the significance of the liturgical year and its seasons. But more importantly, Louie and Fr. Glenn explored the intrinsic connection of the liturgical seasons with the Gospel and a richer relationship with our Lord.

The Joy of Evangelization: Our Mission, God's Imagination by Jose Miguel Pulido

The Joy of Evangelization: Our Mission, God's Imagination by Jose Miguel Pulido

Our speaker for November 2025 is a returning speaker, Jose Pulido, the founder of At The Service.

As a sequel to his 2024 talk, Jose will share how to clearly articulate our mission in evangelization and at the same time, dive into God's imagination when faith is put into action.

On Factions: When Reverence Becomes Resistance by Nicholas Bezzina

On Factions: When Reverence Becomes Resistance by Nicholas Bezzina

Our speaker for October was Nicholas Bezzina, one of the Instituted Acolytes serving at St. John Henry Newman and he will share his journey of faith, including his experience with traditionalist circles.

As the world spirals out of control and cultural foundations constantly being eroded, many are flocking into the Church to find stability. However, even the Church is not immune to its members forming cliques, factions, and political parties.

What is obedience? When does fidelity devolve into factionalism? How do we guard against factionalism? And what kind of authority does the Church wield regarding discipline and worship? These are some of the questions Nick addressed in his talk.

Our speaker for September 2025 was Fr. Daniel Seo of Our Lady of Peace Korean Catholic Center, and he spoke on the role of beauty and theology when it comes to Church Architecture.

July is the month dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus and our speaker was Steve Lovison, founder of Adoration Servants, an organization that provides a comprehensive Eucharistic Adoration System for use by any chapel such as SF Adoration and OC Adoration.

The Biblical Case for Marian Devotion by Fr. Glenn Baaten

Our speaker for November 2024 was St. John Henry Newman's very own, Fr. Glenn Baaten, who is also the chaplain of the Santiago Retreat Center.

As Christians, shouldn't we be only devoted to Christ? Isn't devotion to Mary idolatry? And if Mary is such an important figure, won't the Bible say so? These are some of the questions Fr. Glenn addressed in his talk. And also, since he's a convert from Protestantism, how did Fr. Glenn come to terms with this belief and practice?

Catholics in Politics: Grace and the Common Good by Mayor Tara Campbell

What are the challenges Catholics encounter in office? How do Catholic politicians stay true to the Gospel while upholding their secular office duties? And what can Christian citizens who are not in office, do to promote the common good in our own communities?

Our speaker for September 2024 was Mayor Tara Campbell of Yorba Linda. She also answered several questions on how to get involved locally and shared how the sacramental life can aid our daily duties. The Holy Family and the Joy of Evangelization by Jose Pulido

The Holy Family and the Joy of Evangelization by Jose Pulido

Evangelization is something that can be difficult, even painful, because we are often called to share our Faith with those who are close to us. How can we look to the Holy Family as a model of evangelization?

Theology on Tap OC's speaker last August was Jose Pulido, founder of At The Service, an Evangelization Coaching Ministry. His goal is to teach how evangelization can be life-giving for those being evangelized and also the evangelist. He also shared some strategies on how the one receiving the Gospel can feel respected, affirmed, and supported. He also covered practical skills that are immediately actionable, as well as discuss great stories for inspiration.

For the month of April in Theology on Tap OC 2024, our speaker was Minh Hoang, an on-fire street evangelist and President of CSUF's Pro-Life Club.

All Christians are called to share the Gospel both in action and in words. But what if you feel like you don't have the gift of preaching in public? How do you share the Good News of Jesus Christ without making people feel like a conversion project? In addition to an active prayer life, what preparatory steps should we take? At the center of homelessness is a person, not a house and people deserve dignity and healing. They are not problems to be solved. Everything we do and say is found within this principle–the person first." What is the Christian Vision of Education? by Chris Weir

What is the Christian Vision of Education? by Chris Weir

For August, we featured Chris Weir, Executive Director of The Camino Schools, to talk about the Christian vision on Education.

How does the Christian approach to education differ from the modern/secular approach? In what ways can we gradually open ourselves and pave this vision for future generations? What does it look like in the real world?

Here are some of the references from the talk:

The First Apology of St. Justin Martyr (~156AD)

The First Apology was one of the earliest examples of Catholic apologetics addressed by St. Justin Martyr to the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius. In addition to arguing against the persecution of individuals solely for being Christian, Justin also provides the Emperor with a defense of the philosophy of Christianity and a detailed explanation of contemporary Christian practices and rituals.

Rerum Novarum (On Capital and Labor) by Pope Leo XIII (1891)

Rerum Novarum (On Capital and Labor) by Pope Leo XIII (1891)

Here are some notable quotations from Pope Leo XIII's encyclical:

"The contention, then, that the civil government should at its option intrude into and exercise intimate control over the family and the household is a great and pernicious error. True, if a family finds itself in exceeding distress, utterly deprived of the counsel of friends, and without any prospect of extricating itself, it is right that extreme necessity be met by public aid, since each family is a part of the commonwealth." (par. 14)

"The first and most fundamental principle, therefore, if one would undertake to alleviate the condition of the masses, must be the inviolability of private property." (par. 15)

"[F]or no practical solution of this question will be found apart from the intervention of religion and of the Church." (par. 16)

"If any there are who pretend differently - who hold out to a hard-pressed people the boon of freedom from pain and trouble, an undisturbed repose, and constant enjoyment - they delude the people and impose upon them, and their lying promises will only one day bring forth evils worse than the present. Nothing is more useful than to look upon the world as it really is, and at the same time to seek elsewhere, as We have said, for the solace to its troubles." (par. 18)

"[I]t is more easy to understand that the true worth and nobility of man lie in his moral qualities, that is, in virtue; that virtue is, moreover, the common inheritance of men, equally within the reach of high and low, rich and poor; and that virtue, and virtue alone, wherever found, will be followed by the rewards of everlasting happiness." (par. 24)

"No matter what changes may occur in forms of government, there will ever be differences and inequalities of condition in the State. Society cannot exist or be conceived of without them. Some there must be who devote themselves to the work of the commonwealth, who make the laws or administer justice, or whose advice and authority govern the nation in times of peace, and defend it in war." (par.34)

"[N]o man has in this matter power over himself. To consent to any treatment which is calculated to defeat the end and purpose of his being is beyond his right; he cannot give up his soul to servitude, for it is not man's own rights which are here in question, but the rights of God, the most sacred and inviolable of rights." (par. 40)

"Women, again, are not suited for certain occupations; a woman is by nature fitted for home-work, and it is that which is best adapted at once to preserve her modesty and to promote the good bringing up of children and the well-being of the family." (par. 42)

"We have seen that this great labor question cannot be solved save by assuming as a principle that private ownership must be held sacred and inviolable. The law, therefore, should favor ownership, and its policy should be to induce as many as possible of the people to become owners." (par.46)

"But every precaution should be taken not to violate the rights of individuals and not to impose unreasonable regulations under pretense of public benefit. For laws only bind when they are in accordance with right reason, and, hence, with the eternal law of God." (par. 52)

"To sum up, then, We may lay it down as a general and lasting law that working men's associations should be so organized and governed as to furnish the best and most suitable means for attaining what is aimed at, that is to say, for helping each individual member to better his condition to the utmost in body, soul, and property." (par. 57)

"[A]nd since religion alone... can avail to destroy the evil at its root, all men should rest persuaded that main thing needful is to re-establish Christian morals, apart from which all the plans and devices of the wisest will prove of little avail." (par. 62)

Man on Fire: The Dignity of Fatherhood by Richard Pintang

Richard Pintang, the founder and host of @thecatholicdadcast, talked about what it truly means to be a father of faith through stories, biblical references, and teachings of the Church.

How can we gain a deeper appreciation for fathers and father figures? How do we cultivate a passion for fatherhood that is rooted in love, sacrifice, and commitment to the family? How do we encourage men to establish and develop a strong relationship with God?

Family Matters: Subsidiarity and the Economy by Dcn. Bernie Ocampo

Family Matters: Subsidiarity and the Economy by Dcn. Bernie Ocampo

Theology on Tap OC's first talk for 2023 featured Deacon Bernie Ocampo of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Irvine. He spoke on how the smallest unit of society, the family, plays a role not just in the economy, but also politically in terms of subsidiarity. The closing discussion and Q&A was led by the lead organizer, Louie Calma.

Family is the original cell of social life (CCC 2207). However, with the American emphasis on the individual, freedom, and keeping up with the ever-rising cost of living, our duties and responsibilities towards the family becomes incidental. In what ways can we restore a vision that puts the family first in our culture? How does the Gospel manifest according to our state of life?

The Martyrdom of St. Ignatius of Antioch (~108AD)

The Emperor Trajan asked Ignatius, "Do we not then seem to you to have the gods in our mind, whose assistance we enjoy in fighting against our enemies?"

St. Ignatius rebukes the emperor saying, "You are in error when you call the demons of the nations gods. For there is but one God, who made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that are in them; and one Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, whose kingdom may I enjoy."

Epistle to the Smyrneans by St. Ignatius of Antioch (~110AD)

From Chapter 8 of St. Ignatius's Epistle,

"See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid."

Divini Illius Magistri (On Christian Education) by Pope Pius XI (1929)

Divini Illius Magistri (On Christian Education) by Pope Pius XI (1929)

In paragraph 7, Pope Pius XI states:

"It is therefore as important to make no mistake in education, as it is to make no mistake in the pursuit of the last end, with which the whole work of education is intimately and necessarily connected. In fact, since education consists essentially in preparing man for what he must be and for what he must do here below, in order to attain the sublime end for which he was created, it is clear that there can be no true education which is not wholly directed to man's last end, and that in the present order of Providence, since God has revealed Himself to us in the Person of His Only Begotten Son, who alone is "the way, the truth and the life," there can be no ideally perfect education which is not Christian education."

Vix Pervenit (On Usury and Other Dishonest Profits) - Pope Benedict XIV (1745)

Vix Pervenit (On Usury and Other Dishonest Profits) - Pope Benedict XIV (1745)

In paragraph 10, Pope Benedict XIV states,

"...We exhort you not to listen to those who say that today the issue of usury is present in name only, since gain is almost always obtained from money given to another. How false is this opinion and how far removed from the truth! We can easily understand this if we consider that the nature of one contract differs from the nature of another. By the same token, the things which result from these contracts will differ in accordance with the varying nature of the contracts. Truly an obvious difference exists between gain which arises from money legally, and therefore can be upheld in the courts of both civil and canon law, and gain which is illicitly obtained, and must therefore be returned according to the judgments of both courts. Thus, it is clearly invalid to suggest, on the grounds that some gain is usually received from money lent out, that the issue of usury is irrelevant in our times."

Who is Mary? Why are Catholics so fixated upon her? And why are there dogmas about Mary?
