The Plastic Free Movement: Part 2

The Plastic Free Movement: Part 2

Inside the Fight for a Global Plastics Treaty: In part two of our series, we're joined by Dr. Marcus Eriksen, co-founder of 5 Gyres and Leap Lab, marine conservation expert, and veteran of more than 20 ocean expeditions. At the time of this conversation, he was headed to Geneva for a critical round of UN treaty negotiations on plastic pollution, talks that are still ongoing today. From plastic-filled camels in Dubai to bottle caps that will outlast us all, this episode goes deep on where plastic pollution ends up, what it's doing to our bodies, and why local grassroots power might be the strongest tool we have.

The Plastic Free Movement: Part 1

What's Really Happening to Our Planet: We sat down with Dr. Win Cowger (aka Dr. Trash), research director at the Moore Institute for Plastic Pollution Research, to talk about where plastic pollution actually comes from, what it's doing to our health, and why local action might matter more than global treaties right now. From microplastics in our blood to tire particles killing salmon in Washington, this conversation covers the science, the policy, and the path forward. Dr. Cowger also opens up about how federal funding cuts are hitting environmental research and what that means for the future of the field.

Finding Your Climate Voice: A Vital Conversation With Deborah McNamara

In this episode of the "Let's Talk About Climate" podcast, former National Climate Fellow Will Felix talks with Deborah McNamara, Co-Executive Director of ClimateVoice, about the urgent need to strengthen climate policy and corporate climate action. They highlight a concerning trend: fossil fuel companies allocate over 50% of lobbying funds to obstruct climate progress, while the tech industry only dedicates 4-6% towards supporting climate policies. McNamara urges eco-conscious companies to boost advocacy, emphasizing ClimateVoice's impactful "Escape the Chamber" campaign.

Climate Wins In Michigan

To tout and celebrate the funding from the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and to discuss local implementation in Michigan, Change the Chamber hosted an educational webinar in partnership with the Climate Action Campaign. We presented how the IRA has benefitted Michigan particularly, with state-specific information about investments and projects made possible through IRA and IIJA funding and regulations. We also discussed present and upcoming opportunities to continue the progress these bills have created, focusing on achieving the science-based climate target of 50% greenhouse gas emissions reductions by 2030 and improved environmental justice.

Thank you to our excellent speakers, Aaron Petykowski (Climate Action Campaign), Dionna Brown (Black Millennials for Flint), and John Freeman (Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association), for their valuable presentations and discussions. We would also like to thank our wonderful moderator, Will Felix (Change the Chamber). This event greatly benefitted from all of your contributions and your crucial work and experiences.

Diving Into Baltimore’s Water Crisis

Diving Into Baltimore’s Water Crisis

Baltimore is a 62% Black port city on the coast of Maryland. It is the most populous city in Maryland and is the home of more than 200 neighborhoods and a city famous for its historical landmarks, excellent seafood, and tourist attractions. Its history stretches back to the 1700s, with redlining creating a cycle impacting public works, housing, and planning in the city that has been detrimental to the city’s majority-Black population. In this episode of Let’s Talk About Climate, National Climate Fellows Will Felix and Erika Pietrzak talk with Baltimore water quality experts Tom Pelton & Darin Crew about why the poor water quality in Baltimore is such an epidemic, and what can be done to fix it.

Climate Wins In Wisconsin

Climate Wins In Wisconsin

Change the Chamber hosted a successful “Climate Wins In Wisconsin” event thanks to our engaging and informative speakers, Aaron Petykowski (Climate Action Campaign), Andrew Werthmann (Eau Claire, WI City Councilmember), and Katie Rosenburg (Mayor of Wausau, WI).
It was great to hear about all the initiatives taking place in Wisconsin that have been made easier through federal climate legislation, including the Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the upcoming 2023 Farm Bill.
