It's ok to have passions outside of work. (Regular Rants)

Another week, another deep life discussion sparked by F1... Max Verstappen copped a lot of backlash after staying up until 3am racing on his sim. What these critics seem to forget is that Max has 3 world championships under his belt and is still well ahead in the current F1 rankings. With all this success, surely he deserves to have a bit of time to himself without being criticised? If the average person is allowed to have passions outside of work, why aren't people in the public eye? Is it right that we hold them to such an unattainable standard? All on this weeks' Jp's Ponderings Podcast.

Why TEAMWORK is ESSENTIAL to success (Regular Rants)

Why TEAMWORK is ESSENTIAL to success (Regular Rants)

While Formula 1 may seem like an individual sport, it's actually very much about teamwork. Last week in the Hungarian GP, McLaren's strategy had everyone, including the drivers, questioning their decisions. With the team pleading with Lando Norris to toe the team line and give Oscar Piastri his maiden win, Norris eventually fell into line with the team decision, albeit rather begrudgingly. How often does this happen to you at work? Listen in to discover how these lessons from F1 can be applied across all areas of your work life.

How to give honest feedback (without offending)

How to give honest feedback (without offending)

A mate sent me some shocking footage of one of my stores - mouldy fruit and empty ends during one of our busiest trading periods. Being a Sunday and a regional store isn't an excuse and this isn't something that any of our customers should ever see in a Drakes store.

As frustrating as it is, it gave me an opportunity to address the issue so that the next time my mate goes into store, he can send me more positive footage. It really highlights how important it is to give honest feedback, and how it can make such a huge difference in business and life in general. It comes down to how you accept the feedback and respond to it.

In this episode of JP's Ponderings we'll talk about some methods to give honest feedback that's actually constructive, and dive into how the experience can improve my business. #jpdrake #jpsponderings #podcast #constructivecriticism #givingfeedback #businessowner #businessmentor #management #retail #retailmanagement #supermarket

Is work/life balance achievable? (Jp's Ponderings)

When I was a store manager, I would work 70 hour weeks.

Do I miss doing this? Not at all.

Do I think the kids of today should do them? NOT AT ALL.

I encourage my team to find their passions outside of work - work is meant to improve your life, not take it over. I DO believe, however, that the team coming through today miss out on a lot of opportunities for personal development because they simply don't get the time with their potential mentors. It's a struggle to balance this out. What do you think?

A Supermarket Director's Perspective On Wage Increases (JP's Ponderings)

A Supermarket Director's Perspective On Wage Increases (JP's Ponderings)

Earlier this month, the Fair Work Commission increased both the minimum and award wages by 3.75 per cent, taking effect from July 1. Businesses will have to absorb this increase - with less than a month to prepare - while continuing to battle rising costs in utilities, fuel, production costs and more in a tough economic environment. On the flip side, Australian Federal politicians were also awarded a 3.5% pay rise, with our Prime Minister Anthony Albanese set to take home an extra $20,542 a year.

The reality is that small businesses will need to pass these costs on, driving prices up - and the vicious cycle continues. Is it time to start looking at the cost of utilities instead of this band-aid solution?

Jp's Ponderings - Why Product innovation is critical to supermarket success

Jp's Ponderings - Why Product innovation is critical to supermarket success

How do you keep people interested in your brand? In the supermarket game, new product development, or NPD, is critical. Customers want to see new things and try new flavours when they come into our stores; sometimes, it’s as simple as seeing their name on a bottle of Coke. But as the Cost of Living crisis hits a crescendo, what will happen to those brands that are pulling back on NPD spend? I ponder over this in this weeks’ podcast.

JP's Ponderings - Are we going too far with Censorship?

JP's Ponderings - Are we going too far with Censorship?

At the height of the pandemic, I recorded a podcast with Dr Nikolai Petrovsky, a globally-renowned researcher in the field of immunology, endocrinology and vaccine development. He was also the only Australian to have an approved COVID vaccine on the market - and yet, despite his absolute expertise on the subject, YouTube decided to pull my podcast down for "misinformation."

Someone was sitting in an office, making decisions on what people could or could not learn about what was happening around the world.

We were being censored. Fast forward to 2024, and the Government is in a legal stoush with Twitter to remove footage of a recent attack in Sydney. Which begs the question - when does Censorship go too far? And who SHOULD have the ultimate say in what gets censored? I ponder over this in this weeks' episode of JP's Ponderings.
