When Death Has A Date

When Death Has A Date

When death has a date, you'd think the estate would be inorder. But that's not usually how it goes.

MAID, or medical assistance in dying, gives Canadians the legal option to choose the timing of their death. And that changes the estate planning conversation in ways most people haven't considered. In this episode I'm walking through what MAID means for your documents, your executor, and your family. Not the medical side, not the policy side, but the practical side.

What needs to be in place and why capacity timing matters more than most people realize. What a personal directive can and can't do, including one thing that surprises a lot of people. What the executor is really walking into when death is anticipated rather than sudden. And what families should be thinking about when someone they love is living with a serious illness.

This one's worth a listen whether you're thinking about your own planning or supporting someone who is.

The Gap in Most Estate Plans

The Gap in Most Estate Plans

Most people think a will covers everything. It doesn't.

A will only takes effect after death, which means it does nothing if you're still alive but unable to manage your finances or make healthcare decisions.

This episode looks at the two documents that fill that gap,why so many families are caught off guard without them, and what complete estate planning actually looks like.
