When the Scroll Replaces the Drink - Tawny's Story
In this episode, I sit down with Tawny Lara—author of the popular book Dry Humping and the woman widely known as the “Sober Sexpert.” We talk about her sobriety story, the life she built after alcohol, and the surprising new addiction that began taking its place: social media.
Tawny found herself endlessly scrolling and feeling as though her time, attention, creativity—and even her soul—were being sucked away. She shares the practical steps she took to reclaim her life and create a healthier relationship with technology.
This is a thoughtful, honest back-and-forth about social media addiction, the direction our culture is heading, and what happens when the scroll starts replacing the drink.

How Drinking Alone Took Over Shaz’s Life — and How He Finally Quit
Shaz knew his drinking was putting his marriage at risk. But instead of quitting alcohol, he found himself planning for what would happen when his marriage eventually fell apart.
Growing up in Chicago as the son of Pakistani immigrants, alcohol became normalized early when his family went from running a tobacco shop to owning liquor stores. What began as social drinking eventually followed Shaz into marriage and fatherhood before turning into daily, secret drinking alone.
In this episode of The Sober New Yorker, Shaz shares how alcohol addiction began affecting his wife, his children, and the life they had built together. He also talks about finding a sober community while he was still drinking—including joining meetings with his camera off and a White Claw beside him.
Then, on Christmas night, something changed. Shaz finished a glass of wine, went to bed, and decided he didn’t want to drink anymore. What happened next changed the trajectory of his family.

From a Handle of Vodka a Day to 19 Years Sober | Chris Marshall
Chris Marshall got his first DUI at 16, on only his second time drinking. By 23, he was drinking a handle of vodka a day, had failed out of college, and didn’t believe he would live to see 25.
Today, Chris is 19 years sober.
In this episode of The Sober New Yorker, Chris shares how his need to belong fueled his alcohol addiction, why multiple trips to treatment didn’t initially work, and what finally helped him get sober at 23.
Chris also talks about what became possible after he quit drinking. He became a substance use counselor and eventually founded Sans Bar, one of the first alcohol-free bars in the U.S. His work has since helped launch more than 150 non-alcoholic bars, bottle shops, and pop-ups around the world.
Chris’s story is about alcohol addiction, sobriety, recovery, and discovering that the connection he had been searching for through alcohol was possible without it.

Since getting sober in April 2024, she has lost more than 80 pounds and found a completely different way of living.

She Wanted to Quit Drinking for 10 Years. What Finally Made Her Stop?
Marissa Cherepanov knew for nearly a decade that she wanted to quit drinking. She took 30-day breaks, promised herself she would eventually stop, and kept waiting for the right time.
As a working mom of four with a demanding career, her drinking became increasingly difficult to ignore. After COVID, the loss of her grandmother, growing responsibilities, and stress at home, Marissa reached a point where she felt like she needed alcohol just to feel normal.
Then one conversation with her children changed everything.
In this episode of The Sober New Yorker, Marissa shares the moment she pictured two completely different futures for her kids: one if she continued drinking and another if she stopped. That night, she told her husband she would never drink again.
Marissa also opens up about her past, becoming a mother, building a successful career, changing her habits in early sobriety, and how quitting alcohol opened the door to opportunities she never imagined.
More than three years later, Marissa’s life looks completely different, and it started with one decision she had been putting off for years.

She Blacked Out at a Wedding in Front of Her Kids. She Hasn’t Drank Alcohol Since.
Wendy Behar was 35 years old when she blacked out at a wedding in front of her two children. The next morning, her husband cried, and Wendy knew something had to change. She went to her first AA meeting and has been sober since 1998.
In this episode of The Sober New Yorker, Wendy shares how drinking progressed from weekends to a daily habit as the stress of motherhood and problems in her marriage grew. Toward the end, alcohol, vodka, and Valium had become her way of taking the edge off.
Getting sober was only the beginning. Wendy went back to graduate school at 40, became a licensed therapist and addiction expert, and built a career helping individuals and families affected by addiction.
Wendy and Melissa also talk about emotional sobriety, codependency, relationships, healthy boundaries, and why quitting alcohol often requires learning how to finally take care of yourself.

She Was Drinking 3 Bottles of Wine a Night. Then Her Husband Said This.
Jessica Guerrieri was drinking as much as three bottles of wine a night or a handle of vodka every other day when her husband told her he wasn’t comfortable having children with her while she was drinking that way. Jessica had always dreamed of becoming a mom, but her first thought was that maybe she would give up that dream so she could keep drinking.
That realization changed something.
In this episode of The Sober New Yorker, Jessica shares how alcohol addiction progressed into blackout drinking, the morning she finally asked for help, and what happened when she discovered she was pregnant just 30 days into sobriety.
Jessica also opens up about developing another substance addiction six years after quitting alcohol, the pressures of motherhood, mommy wine culture, ADHD, relapse, and learning to recognize the need to escape beneath her addictive behaviors.
Now 13 years sober from alcohol, Jessica is an award-winning author and sober mom of three who uses fiction to start conversations about addiction, motherhood, recovery, and the things women are often afraid to say out loud.

She Thought She Was a Functional Drinker. Then Came the 7 A.M. Tequila Shots.
Anne Skriba was a college athlete, basketball coach, and high achiever who always found a way to show up. For years, that made it easy to believe her drinking wasn’t really a problem.
But alcohol slowly became part of everything. Anne went from drinking socially to drinking alone and every day. Eventually, she was taking tequila shots at 7 a.m. just to open her computer and start work.
In this episode of The Sober New Yorker, Anne shares how her identity as an athlete shaped her relationship with alcohol, why being high functioning made it harder to recognize what was happening, and how therapy eventually led her to question drinking for the first time.
Her therapist never demanded that she quit. Instead, she asked Anne a question that changed the direction of her life: Would you like a new set of tools?
Anne also talks about sober curiosity, finding community, rebuilding her identity without alcohol, and how more than three years of sobriety eventually led her to help others do the same.

“Quit Drinking or I’ll Live With Dad Forever” | Keri Anderson’s Sobriety Story
Keri Anderson knew her drinking was getting worse. She was blacking out, experiencing panic attacks, going to work hungover, and drinking one to two bottles of wine a night. Still, she couldn’t stop.
Then her 16-year-old daughter showed up at her house while Keri was drunk and gave her an ultimatum: quit drinking or lose their relationship.
Two days later, Keri entered detox.
In this episode of The Sober New Yorker, Keri shares how her drinking escalated after separating from her husband, what was really happening behind closed doors, and why even after her daughter’s ultimatum, her biggest fear entering treatment was how she would live the rest of her life without alcohol.
Keri also talks about spending 90 days in treatment, rebuilding her relationship with her daughter, finding faith and sober community, and what life looks like after 10 years without alcohol.
Today, Keri is ready to stop being quiet about her sobriety and start sharing the story that changed her life.

The Zero-Proof Revolution in Milwaukee
Patrick is the founder of Zero Proof Pass, Milwaukee’s first non-alcoholic passport program, launched in July 2025. Based in downtown Milwaukee, he created Zero Proof Pass to challenge the idea that alcohol is required to fully experience the city. Through partnerships with bars, cafés, breweries, cocktail lounges, and nightclubs, the program makes zero-proof options more visible, accessible, and celebrated across Milwaukee.
Growing up in Wisconsin—where drinking culture runs deep—Patrick’s relationship with alcohol wasn’t linear. He experimented with being alcohol-free before it finally stuck. Without a business background, but with a sharp eye for what was missing, he recognized that people who don’t drink are craving real connection and social experiences that don’t revolve around alcohol. Zero Proof Pass was born from that gap, helping to reshape what community and nightlife can look like without booze at the center.

When the Sober Butterfly Gets Tired of Flying - Nadine's Story
Nadine, known to many as The Sober Butterfly, is a proud New Yorker, educator, podcaster, and expert sober traveler who’s been living alcohol-free for over four years. Through her podcast and vibrant online presence, she inspires others to embrace sobriety as a path to freedom, exploration, and self-discovery.
In this conversation, Nadine opens up with raw honesty about the realities of content creation, Instagram burnout, and a high-functioning depressive episode that reminded her—and all of us—that even in sobriety, mental health matters. “Half a Hundred Episodes, 54 Years of Grit”
This week I’m celebrating two milestones: my 50th episode and my 54th birthday. I’m reflecting on three birthdays—my "crashing" 19th, my shaky first sober one at six weeks alcohol-free, and today’s milestone fresh off an unforgettable sober meetup in Toronto.
I’m beyond grateful to everyone who’s helped me get here—especially you, my listeners. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for tuning in, for sharing space with my stories and interviews, and for reminding me that sober storytelling matters. My hope is that these episodes inspire you to make bold choices and become the badass you already are.
