Jesse Turner: From Rejection to WA State Player

Jesse Turner: From Rejection to WA State Player

Jesse Turner is the captain of Swan Districts Football Club, a five-time consecutive WA State representative and a secondary school teacher. Jesse reflects on his football journey from Bassendean Junior Football Club through the Swan Districts development pathway, sharing the setbacks that shaped his career. He opens up about being overlooked, cut from Colts, missing a Colts Grand Final after playing 18 consecutive games and the challenges of competing while unknowingly dealing with anaemia.

Rather than walking away, Jesse committed to becoming the hardest worker on the track. That mindset earned him selection in the reserves, a league debut in his first senior year and ultimately established him as one of the WAFL's most consistent midfielders and leaders. Jesse also discusses the influence of coaches throughout his career, including the impact Andrew "Pruey" Pruyn had by believing in him when others didn't.

He shares what it takes to balance the demands of semi-professional football with teaching, the sacrifices required to perform at an elite level, his teaching focus on relationships and positive reinforcement and the motivation he draws from his single mum and younger brother.

Ret Hartley: When the Business Collapses but The Man Doesn’t

Ret reflects on a turbulent 12 months that saw him living in Bali, surviving a serious scooter accident, navigating co-parenting his young daughter and facing the collapse of his fitness business, S30. S30 grew to 27 locations across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore before entering administration and liquidation, a rise and fall that delivered hard-earned lessons in leadership, ownership and resilience. With 15 years in the fitness industry, Ret shares his journey from New Zealand to personal training in Melbourne, then building franchises in Perth through F45. He details the critical role that community, culture and well-designed systems played in that time. Ret is now building Daawg Haus, an online platform grounded in structured training, strong personal standards and brotherhood. Its mission is simple: help men lead themselves better, so they can lead their families, careers and lives with strength, presence and integrity.

Kieran Toohey: Combat Engineer to Cancelled

Kieran Toohey: Combat Engineer to Cancelled

Kieran grew up the 10th of 12 kids in a rough and resource scarce environment where humour, solitude and strong sibling bonds became survival tools. That foundation shaped the man who went on to serve 14 years in the Australian Army, deploying five times as a combat engineer and draftsman before being unfairly dismissed amid the Defence email culture controversy. He shares how the reputational fallout damaged relationships and pushed him toward suicide, and how he rebuilt himself through Stoic philosophy, meditation and disciplined daily habits. We discuss trauma and mental health through a neuroscience lens, challenging why “just talk about it” does not work for everyone, particularly hyper masculine cohorts. Kieran unpacks how many mental health frameworks cherry pick psychology while overlooking biology and social context. Today, he researches institutional abuse at Flinders University, using qualitative interviews to identify themes such as betrayal and leadership abuse to help inform policy change.
