The landscape of homeschooling has shifted dramatically over the last decade. In this episode, host Jacob Gooden sits down with homeschool parent and tech entrepreneur Oshri Cohen to discuss modern education strategies, navigating neurodiversity, and leveraging contemporary technology. Oshri shares his family's journey into homeschooling after traditional public, private, and Montessori school environments failed his two dyslexic sons. Rather than forcing rigid structures, Oshri and his wife focus on teaching applied knowledge, critical thinking, and real-world experience.
Throughout the conversation, Oshri explains how his family integrates cutting-edge tools into their daily routine. His children use artificial intelligence daily to ask deep questions, explore complex topics, and learn via the Socratic method. Oshri also highlights the concept of worldschooling, sharing how living in places like Bulgaria, Costa Rica, and Panama provides his sons with hands-on history and cultural lessons that books alone cannot replicate.
The discussion also tackles common homeschooling misconceptions, including the ubiquitous question of socialization. Oshri explains why interacting across diverse age groups and real-world environments fosters stronger communication skills than standard classroom settings. He offers valuable encouragement for parents contemplating homeschooling, emphasizing that the biggest hurdle is often shifting the adult mindset around how learning is measured.
Key Takeaways
Focus on applied knowledge and real-world context rather than rote memorization or standard testing metrics.
Integrate interactive AI tools to encourage children to think critically through Socratic questioning.
Embrace worldschooling and travel to give children firsthand exposure to culture, economics, and history.
Reframe socialization around meaningful communication across all age groups rather than strict peer groups.
Shift the parental mindset from measuring schoolwork completed to evaluating actual learning and curiosity.

On today's show, I dive deep into my personal journey growing up as a homeschool kid in Southern California. From starting out in public school to transitioning into home education for 2nd grade and going all the way through high school, this is a candid reflection on how my upbringing shaped my independence, routine, and confidence. I open up about the positive aspects (such as building strong time-management skills and thriving in unique extracurriculars like swing dancing and mime troupe) while addressing the flaws, including creationist-focused science curricula and a lack of exposure to diverse worldviews. Finally, I share my current perspective on the homeschool debate, advocating for common-sense regulations to protect children while emphasizing the need for nuanced, open conversations.
Key Takeaways
- Transitioning to homeschooling requires intentional structure, but finding the right curriculum and building a strong local community are key to long-term social and academic success.
- Experiencing home education can foster strong self-reliance, time-management capabilities, and the flexibility to pursue unique hobbies or business ventures.
- A lack of diverse perspectives in faith-based curricula, particularly around science and contrasting worldviews, can create significant knowledge gaps later in life.
- Evaluating homeschooling should be done on a case-by-case basis, with an emphasis on common-sense regulations to ensure child safety and educational standards.
Favorite Quote
"It's not as simple as yes regulation, no regulation. Like, it's not as simple as just saying, 'Let's take existing rules and slap them on this thing.' It's not that easy. It's very much a conversation that needs to continue to happen and evolve with lawmakers, with alumni, with current homeschool families, with the education systems that are building the curriculums that are being used for kids." — Jacob Gooden

How Homeschooling Left Me Unprepared for College and Adulthood
Help financially support Jodie's Documentary: https://gofund.me/0c4256b53
Jodie was homeschooled from preschool through high school in a very Christian, Independent Baptist environment. Her mom gave her a lot of freedom to explore subjects she was interested in, but often relied on textbooks and self-teaching instead of actually teaching the material. Over time, Jodie fell behind academically (especially in math) and entered college realizing just how many educational gaps she had to overcome.
In this episode, Jodie shares what it was like discovering that college was even an option, catching up academically as an adult, and realizing how homeschooling had affected her. We also talk about religious deconstruction, coming out as gay, family reactions, and the supportive role her wife has played. Jodie also shares her plans for a documentary exploring homeschooling, its lack of regulation, and the stories of people affected by it.
In this episode, we talk about...
- Growing up in a strict Christian homeschool environment
- The challenges of self-teaching and falling behind academically
- Entering college and discovering just how much catching up was necessary
- Religious deconstruction and coming out as gay
- Why Jodie believes homeschooling requires community, accountability, and support
- Her upcoming documentary about the realities of homeschooling
Connect with Jodie
Jodie is currently looking for people to participate in her documentary, including homeschool alumni, educators, people with experience in law or politics, and anyone with relevant experience to share.

Why I Felt Completely Unprepared for Adulthood After Homeschooling
If you want to support the channel, like, comment, share, or consider buying me a coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/exhsclub
Today, I'm sitting down with Rachael to unpack her experience growing up homeschooled in a deeply evangelical Christian environment. Rachael shares how undiagnosed ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia made school difficult while the pressure to be a “perfect” homeschool kid led her to blame herself rather than question the system. She also talks about purity culture, rigid gender roles, the pressure to discover God’s perfect plan for her life, and why she felt completely unprepared to launch into adulthood after graduation. Her journey eventually took her to YWAM and overseas to Thailand, where new experiences helped her begin recognizing emotions she had spent years denying (including anger). Today, Rachael is working through years of religious deconstruction and therapy while reconnecting with the creativity and artistic identity she once felt ashamed to embrace.

I Escaped the Homeschool Bubble and Started Taking Risks
If you want to support the channel, like, comment, share, or consider buying me a coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/exhsclub
After growing up between Switzerland and the United States, Bradley Wyss had a homeschool experience that was anything but conventional. He moved between public school and homeschooling, eventually earning a Swiss education, starting college, and then returning to the U.S. where he had to complete high school all over again. But the biggest changes came after leaving the tightly connected Christian homeschool community he grew up in. Bradley shares what it was like to question the religious beliefs he had been raised with, deal with purity culture and the fear of breaking the rules, and eventually build a life based more on curiosity, independence, and taking chances. Today, he works in the wind industry, travels extensively, and embraces an adventurous approach to life.
What I especially loved about this conversation was Bradley's perspective on fear. He's faced plenty of uncertainty, from being medically discharged from the Marine Corps because of his degenerative vision condition to figuring out a career and navigating life outside of his childhood religion. Instead of waiting until he feels completely confident, Bradley has learned to take the leap and figure things out along the way.
In This Episode
- Growing up between Switzerland and the United States and moving between public school and homeschooling
- The role of ACE/PACES and the homeschool community in Bradley's childhood
- Why leaving a religious community can be just as difficult as questioning the beliefs themselves
- Breaking down the guilt and fear surrounding purity culture and religious rules
- How Bradley went from an unexpected Marine Corps setback to working in renewable energy
- Building a life around travel, adventure, hobbies, and taking chances
- Why fear doesn't necessarily have to disappear before you make a big change
- Finding community and meaningful relationships after leaving the religious environment you grew up in

Wait no longer, part two of my conversation about friendship with Cari, Jenève, and Noah is here! Find out what happens to friendships as we grow up, move away, get married, have kids, change our beliefs, and become different versions of ourselves. We talk about how adult friendship often looks less like perfectly planned nights out and more like helping a friend clean the house, running errands together, or simply eating pizza and playing cards. We also dig into why shared values and the willingness to let people change can matter more than having identical beliefs. You’ll also here as we compare our homeschool experiences, talk about AWANA and Adventures in Odyssey, share creative projects we made together, and reflected on some of the "glow ups" we've experienced since leaving homeschooling. Ultimately, this conversation comes back to one thing: find the people who will keep showing up as you grow and change.
In this episode, we talk about:
- How homeschool communities can create friendships that feel more like family.
- Why some childhood friendships naturally deepen while others don’t become close until adulthood.
- Maintaining friendships across distance, college, relationships, and major life changes.
- The strange pressure many homeschoolers experienced around boys and girls being friends and the assumption that friendship must mean dating.
- How purity culture and fear of romantic relationships affected the way we understood attraction, dating, and physical affection.
- Why protecting kids from every painful experience can leave them unprepared for adulthood — and how supportive friendships can give young people a safe place to learn from difficult experiences.
- The healing that can happen when adult children and their parents finally have honest conversations about the past.

Can Homeschool Friendships Survive Into Adulthood?

What happens to the friendships you make as a homeschooled kid once you grow up? In this episode of Ex-Homeschoolers Club, I sit down with three longtime friends, Cari, Noah, and Jenève, to talk about the friendships that started through homeschool groups, co-ops, extracurriculars, and family connections — and how those relationships changed as we became adults. We talk about childhood memories, long-distance friendships, reconnecting after college, and what it means to have someone who understands where you came from. We also get into the complicated rules many of us grew up with around opposite-sex friendships, dating, physical affection, and the pressure to avoid anything that might look romantic.
In this episode, we talk about:
- How homeschool communities can create friendships that feel more like family.
- Why some childhood friendships naturally deepen while others don't become close until adulthood.

Growing up homeschooled across multiple countries, experiencing homelessness, transitioning into public school, and eventually earning a PhD, Dr. Jonah Stewart has a story unlike most. In this episode, I sit down with Jonah to talk about their unconventional homeschool experience, the challenges of adapting to traditional education, and how those experiences ultimately shaped a career researching education and advocating for homeschool reform through the Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE). We also discuss ADHD, social development, college, and why every homeschool story is unique.
Key Takeaways
- Dr. Jonah Stewart shares what it was like being homeschooled across the U.S. and Australia.
- How Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) curriculum shaped—and limited—their learning experience.
- The difficult transition from homeschooling to public school during a period of family instability.
- Living with ADHD and discovering learning strategies that actually worked.
- Why social development is just as important as academic success.
- The mission of the Coalition for Responsible Home Education and why responsible oversight matters.
- Lessons learned from college, graduate school, and building an independent adult life.

This week's episode is a little different. Instead of sitting down with a guest, I'm celebrating two major milestones: turning 30 and the Ex-Homeschoolers Club officially passing its second anniversary. I reflect on the challenges of my late twenties, the pressure of reaching a new decade, and why I'm choosing hope instead of fear as I step into this next chapter. I also share my gratitude for everyone who has listened, supported, and trusted me with their stories over the past two years.

What Does Homeschooling Isolation Do To Your Mental Health?

Kate Johnson joins me to share one of the most powerful and difficult stories we've featured on the podcast. We talk about growing up homeschooled in a conservative Christian environment, navigating life after her father's arrest for child sexual abuse material, and how isolation, purity culture, and parentification shaped her childhood. Kate also reflects on finding her voice, questioning long-held beliefs, and rebuilding her identity as an adult. This conversation is heavy at times, but it's ultimately about healing, resilience, and why protecting vulnerable children must be part of the homeschool conversation.
In this episode we discuss:
- Kate's experience growing up homeschooled using Abeka, Calvert, Classical Conversations, and other Christian curricula.
- How her father's arrest shattered the sense of safety her family had built around homeschooling and church.
- The hidden dangers of isolation, parentification, and secrecy within some homeschooling environments.
- Purity culture, consent, and the long-term impact those teachings had on both girls and boys.
- Finding healing, embracing authenticity, and reclaiming her own voice.

Is Online School Really Homeschooling? A Conversation We Need to Have
Where does online school fit into the homeschooling conversation? In this week's episode, I sat down with Mindy to explore that question while unpacking the similarities and differences between public online education and traditional homeschooling. We discuss educational gaps, socialization, student safety, and why the rapid growth of homeschooling is forcing us to rethink how we define home-based education.
We also dive into the broader cultural and political influence of the homeschooling movement, the role of regulation, and why nuanced conversations are essential if we want to improve educational outcomes without losing the flexibility that makes alternative education valuable. Whether you were homeschooled, attended online school, or are simply interested in education policy, this episode offers plenty to think about.

We Deconstructed Our Homeschool and Religious Experiences
Want to hear Liz's homeschool experience? Check out this episode: https://youtu.be/rvHUlhOM9hI?si=j7JGWwCJAMwtrChb
Liz is back in the clubhouse to explore the role religion played in our homeschool upbringings and how those beliefs shaped our identities long after childhood. Liz shares what it was like growing up in an intensely Catholic homeschool environment, from her involvement in the Legion of Mary to embracing modesty culture, purity culture, and the expectation that she might one day become a nun.
Together, we unpack the complicated process of questioning long-held beliefs, navigating religious trauma, and separating personal faith from the cultural expectations that surrounded us. We discuss purity culture, the lack of sex education in many homeschool environments, the experience of deconstruction, and the grief that can accompany rebuilding your worldview. Whether you're still religious, no longer religious, or somewhere in between, this conversation is about finding space to ask questions, heal, and better understand the stories that shaped us.

This week I have the honor of sitting down with author Stefan Merrill Block to discuss his memoir Homeschooled, his years in an isolating homeschooling environment, and the complicated relationship he shared with his mother.
Stefan opens up about being pulled out of public school at age nine, the isolation that followed, the pressure of being told he was a prodigy, and the difficult transition back into traditional school after four and a half years of homeschooling.
We also explore themes that will resonate with many former homeschoolers: loneliness, identity, friendship, family enmeshment, educational neglect, and the long-lasting effects of childhood narratives. Beyond homeschooling, Stefan shares how books became a lifeline, how writing helped him process grief after his mother's death, and why he believes storytelling can be one of the most powerful tools for healing.
Whether you're an ex-homeschooler, current homeschool parent, educator, or simply interested in memoir and family dynamics, this conversation offers a thoughtful look at the complicated realities behind one family's homeschool experience.

What Homeschool Parents Can Learn From Alumni Stories
What happens when homeschool parents actually listen to homeschool alumni? In this episode, I'm sitting down with homeschool mom and former teacher Kim Andrysczyk for a thoughtful conversation about homeschooling, parenting, emotional health, and accountability. Instead of getting defensive about criticism from homeschool graduates, Kim shares why listening matters — and how those conversations can help shape healthier homeschool experiences for future generations.Kim opens up about raising three homeschooled children, navigating learning disabilities and dyslexia, struggling with the blurred lines between parent and teacher, and eventually deciding to send one child back to public school when homeschooling stopped working. Together, Jacob and Kim explore authoritarian parenting, emotional regulation, testing and accountability, homeschool legislation, and why alumni voices deserve to be heard. This episode is a nuanced, compassionate discussion about growth, mistakes, and how families can do better moving forward.*Connect with Kim*• The South Carolina Homeschool Connection: https://www.homeschoolingsc.org• Cola City Homeschoolers Convention: https://www.colacityhomeschoolers.com*Resources Mentioned*• The Myth of Good Christian Parenting: https://www.amazon.com/Myth-Good-Christian-Parenting-Evangelical/dp/1587436647• Good Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be: https://www.amazon.com/Good-Inside-Guide-Becoming-Parent/dp/0063159481• Homeschooled by Stefan Merrill Block: https://bookshop.org/p/books/homeschooled-a-new-york-times-bestselling-memoir-and-read-with-jenna-pick-stefan-merrill-block/7e9b1465fdf608ff?ean=9781335000989&next=t• Stories Behind Stances: https://www.amazon.com/Stories-Behind-Stances-Creating-Empathy/dp/B0C6W15LK7• Rachel Denhollander: https://rachaeldenhollander.comIf you enjoyed this conversation, be sure to subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend who might benefit from hearing this story. She Was Raised to Be the “Perfect” Homeschool Daughter
This week in the clubhouse, I'm sitting down with Lydia to unpack what it was like growing up homeschooled in a large “Fundy-lite” Christian family deeply influenced by Vision Forum culture, purity culture, and Quiverfull-adjacent ideology.
Lydia shares her experience being the oldest of seven children, navigating homeschool co-ops, modesty culture, conservative Christian college, and the immense pressure of becoming the “obedient oldest daughter.” Together, Jacob and Lydia explore how homeschool isolation can exist even inside large communities, the hidden emotional burden placed on oldest daughters, and the long process of deconstructing beliefs that shaped adulthood.
This conversation dives into homeschooling culture, Christian nationalism, purity culture, social isolation, and the struggle to build an identity outside of the expectations placed on homeschool kids.

What Happens When Homeschool Kids Finally Enter the Real World?
This week on the podcast, I sat down with Jaycie to unpack what it was like growing up K–12 homeschooled in a deeply religious environment shaped by ACE curriculum, church culture, and isolation. From role-playing public school in her bedroom as a kid to struggling with depression and culture shock during college, Jaycie shares an honest look at how homeschooling shaped her relationships, faith, and transition into adulthood.
In this episode, we covered:
- ACE curriculum often prioritized religious ideology over deep academic learning
- Homeschool isolation can make transitions into adulthood and college extremely difficult
- Many homeschoolers develop strong self-teaching and research skills
- Fear-based religious messaging can make social connection feel unsafe
- College became both liberating and emotionally overwhelming
- COVID gave many former evangelicals space to reevaluate faith and church culture
- Public school and homeschooling both have tradeoffs, but involvement from parents matters most
- Creative freedom and independent learning were meaningful positives from homeschooling

The Hidden Messages Behind Adventures in Odyssey
This week on the podcast, I sat down with D.L. Mayfield for one of the most intense and thought-provoking conversations we’ve ever had on the Ex-Homeschoolers Club. We unpacked the influence of Focus on the Family, James Dobson, purity culture, and authoritarian parenting on an entire generation of homeschool kids — and what it means to revisit those ideas as adults.

Leaving Evangelical Homeschool Culture Behind
Subscribe to Un•Religiously on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@UnReligiously
What happens when a homeschooled teenager raised in a deeply evangelical environment suddenly enters a community college classroom filled with new ideas, identities, and worldviews?
In this episode of The Ex-Homeschoolers Club, I'm sitting down with YouTuber Lauren Howe, creator of the Un•Religiously channel, to talk about growing up homeschooled in a highly religious environment and navigating the massive culture shock of entering public education and college.
Lauren shares how her family originally started homeschooling due to learning challenges like ADHD, but over time became immersed in the evangelical homeschool culture of the early 2000s. She reflects on everything from joking that school buses were “prison buses” as a kid to grappling with evolution, gender identity, and even yoga classes for the first time in college.
The conversation explores both the benefits and drawbacks of homeschooling, the influence of homeschool culture beyond parents themselves, and the complicated process of reconciling faith with new perspectives.

Want to be alerted when new episodes drop? Join the newsletter: https://exhsclub.beehiiv.com/
In this episode of Ex-Homeschoolers Club, I sit down with my cousin Amanda, a second-grade public school teacher with 13 years of classroom experience, to explore education from the “dark side.” Haha!
Amanda shares what it’s really like inside today’s public schools: what works, what’s frustrating, and what’s changed over the last decade. From student teaching stories to advocating for kids who need services, she offers an honest look at the realities teachers face, including funding challenges, inclusion classrooms, and navigating parents who are (and aren’t) involved.
We also talk candidly about homeschooling; the myths, the shifts in perception, and the surprising reality that even a public school teacher might consider homeschooling her own children.
Key Points
- Why Amanda believes second grade is the “sweet spot”
- What student teaching really looks like (including full classroom takeover)
- How public education has shifted in the last 13 years
- The reality of funding and where resources actually go
- Why parental involvement makes a massive difference
- The biggest myth Amanda had about homeschooling
- Why she’s now reconsidering homeschooling for her own kids
- What kids actually remember about school (hint: not the standards)
If this episode hit home, share it with a parent, teacher, or anyone who's ever wondered what's really going on in our schools. Leave a comment and tell Jacob what landed for you.

Weird Things I Wasn’t Allowed to Do as a Homeschooler
This week on the podcast, we’re throwing a birthday party! It's the one-year anniversary of the Ex-Homeschoolers Club, and to celebrate, I brought back my very first guest and longtime friend Cari Frantz for a fun and nostalgic conversation. We dive deep into the media, books, movies, and music we weren’t allowed to consume growing up as Christian homeschoolers—and the surprising ways we found our way to them as adults. From Harry Potter to Pitbull concerts, purity culture to Plugged-in reviews, we talk about the weird rules we lived by, what we now enjoy guilt-free, and how we're making peace with our past.
Whether you're a fellow ex-homeschooler or just curious about the quirks of conservative upbringings, this episode will have you laughing, nodding along, and maybe even dusting off your old Adventures in Odyssey tapes.
Key Takeaways:
- The irony of being banned from Harry Potter but encouraged to read Narnia
- PluggedIn, Christian DVD players, and other evangelical tools for "safe" media
- Watching or reading forbidden content as adults and learning to trust our own boundaries
- How music like Pure NRG, Backstreet Boys, and even Pitbull shaped our teenage rebellion
- Respecting our parents' intentions while forging our own relationships with pop culture

I Kissed Dating Goodbye Part 3: Purity Culture’s 4-Step Plan for Control
This week I'm diving into Part 3 of I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris—a section packed with so-called "practical tools" for keeping Christian teens pure. Spoiler: it's just more purity culture with a fresh coat of patriarchal paint.
In this episode, I unpack chapters 8 through 11, covering Harris’s infamous four-step plan for building godly relationships. We look at what it means to “start with a clean slate,” why he thinks you need your parents’ permission to date, and the mental gymnastics required to avoid every ounce of human attraction. I also share personal stories about awkward birthday ceremonies, homeschool dating dynamics, and how being taught to distrust your own body messes you up well into adulthood.
This one’s heavy but important—especially if you're trying to untangle the emotional damage of purity culture.
In This Episode, I Cover:
The “Four Steps” to godly dating and why they don’t hold up
How purity culture reinforces shame, secrecy, and lack of bodily autonomy
My own cringe memories of gendered homeschool rituals and toxic birthday parties
How mentorship, boundaries, and even lust are twisted in this framework
- Redefining intimacy, friendship, and trust outside of evangelical fear-mongering

Was I a Homeschool Success Story—or Just the Exception? | #39
This conversation dives into the highs, lows, and hard truths of RB's journey through homeschooling, patriarchal systems, and his path to healing. We discuss his early education in Pennsylvania, the move to Kansas, and the gendered disparities in educational investment he witnessed as the oldest of five siblings. RB opens up about the unintended privileges he received, his culture shock entering college and the workforce, and how he later found healing through therapy, community, and authentic adult friendships. Topics like male friendship, trauma recovery, and starting a coworking space in Texas also make this an episode full of raw honesty and powerful insights.
Key Takeaways:
Homeschooling looked vastly different in Pennsylvania vs. Kansas, with the latter having virtually no oversight.
Patriarchal religious beliefs led to unequal educational opportunities for RB and his sisters.
Post-homeschool life brought intense culture shock, but also personal and professional growth.
RB found healing through therapy, adult friendship, and creating Bastrop Coworking in Texas.

Alyssa opens up about the challenges of masking, navigating dating and friendships as a neurodivergent adult, and how the homeschooling environment lacked the resources and awareness she needed.
We also explore broader societal perceptions of autism, the impact of labeling, and how entrepreneurs and creatives often operate with neurodivergent brilliance. This is a must-listen for anyone who wants a better understanding of what life on the spectrum truly feels like.
Key Takeaways:
What autism is, how it develops neurologically, and common misconceptions
Alyssa's self-diagnosis journey through studying child development and taking the RAADS test
The reality of masking and its emotional toll
Why clear, direct communication is essential for neurodivergent individuals
The failure of many homeschool environments to recognize and support neurodiverse learners

We dive into Mia's unique homeschool upbringing as the youngest of several siblings, her early leap into community college at age 14, and her reflective journey as a neurodivergent adult. From a less structured homeschool experience to discovering her ADHD as an adult, Mia shares candidly about burnout, creativity, and finding her voice through music.
