Episode 5.38: Have Your Say on the Leadership Commission
The Police Leadership Commission is seeking views from literally anyone interested in policing. Academics, media, organisations, victims, the general public, and officers and staff (current or former).
In this episode I run through and critique the survey being used to gather responses. It's completely qualitative, in that you have 700 words for each of the 7 questions asked. That's a massive amount of data for the College to analyse in just a month or two after the closing date of 12 Feb. It even asks for 'sources' to bolster your responses, a very academic practice. Without any ratings or multiple choice, this is a time-consuming form that will likely favour academic responses.
Despite these unhelpful designs, I encourage you to feedback with your thoughts. I hope you enjoy the episode.

Festus served as the Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner from 2021 to 2024, worked as a dedicated Special Constable clocking up 30 hours per week, and is a successful local businessman and public figure. Episode 5.8: Explaining the CVF
The College of Policing updated the CVF last year, from the 2016 version to the latest 2024 version. Forces are gradually transitioning to this new framework when assessing promotion candidates, but aspiring officers remain mystified by the CVF. The language can be confusing, unclear, or have lots of overlaps.
In this podcast I share information about my new 'CVF Demystified' video, which explains every competency and value and more. I also explain the context of the CVF in the podcast, how it's changed, and give a free example of how I explain one of the behaviours.
