Small Ships, Big Adventures: Exploring Tahiti with Windstar Cruises and Joanna Vapor

Small Ships, Big Adventures: Exploring Tahiti with Windstar Cruises and Joanna Vapor

Recorded onboard Windstar Cruises’ Star Breeze, this episode features a lively and personal conversation with Joanna Vapor, Shore Excursion Manager, who has been with Windstar Cruises for ten years. We explore what makes small-ship sailing in French Polynesia so unforgettable, and Joanna shares her insights on both the ship and the destinations, from Tahiti and Moorea to Taha’a, Bora Bora, Huahine, and other Windstar ports around the world.

We dive into the ship’s design, daily life onboard, and culinary highlights — from the elegant Amphora to the new Basil + Bamboo fusion eatery and the classic Candles Steakhouse. Joanna explains how the crew’s warmth, professionalism, and expertise elevate every experience, from officers greeting guests on deck to line dancing evenings in the salon with a multi-generational Polynesian dance troupe that joined the ship, bringing culture, music, and energy to all ages.

We talk about the signature Marina, where guests can swim, kayak, paddleboard, or relax on floating loungers in crystal-clear waters — completely included, effortless, and unforgettable — and how access to the turquoise lagoons makes French Polynesia even more magical. Joanna also shares about the incredible destination discovery experiences, from a private Motu Mahaea lunch in Taha’a to the spectacular Feast & Fire dinner in Bora Bora, and how she helped me plan shore excursions like visiting a pearl farm and snorkeling with manta rays and spotted eagle rays. Each stop was curated yet personal, allowing time to truly immerse in the islands’ natural beauty, culture, and marine life.

My memoir, BRAVE-ish, is now part of the Star Breeze library, a symbolic reminder that travel is about new journeys, friendships, and courage — exploring both the world and oneself. With Joanna’s stories, insider tips, and the magic of small-ship sailing, this episode captures why Windstar Cruises delivers a deeply personal, intimate, and immersive way to experience French Polynesia, with every journey feeling joyful, seamless, and unforgettable.

Walking with Polar Bears: An Arctic Safari with Churchill Wild Guide Terry Elliott

Walking with Polar Bears: An Arctic Safari with Churchill Wild Guide Terry Elliott

Some journeys stay with you long after you leave—and my expeditions with Churchill Wild are exactly that kind of experience. I’ve had the rare privilege of visiting Churchill Wild twice, staying at both Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge and Seal River Heritage Lodge, and each trip deepened my appreciation for the Arctic and the people who guide us through it with such care and respect.

During my expedition to Seal River Heritage Lodge, I was guided by Terry Elliott, a seasoned polar bear guide whose calm presence, deep knowledge, and reverence for the land set the tone from the very first walk on the tundra. Churchill Wild’s land-based polar bear safaris are unlike anything else in the world—walking through bear country with a highly trained team of three guides, moving thoughtfully and deliberately through the landscape, always placing the welfare of the wildlife first.

Walking alongside polar bears in their natural habitat is both humbling and exhilarating, and Terry has a rare gift for making guests feel safe while also helping them truly understand what they are seeing. His insights into polar bear behavior, Arctic ecology, and life in this remote region transform each outing into something far more meaningful than wildlife viewing—it becomes a lesson in respect, patience, and presence.

In this conversation, Terry shares his remarkable journey from city life to the Arctic wilderness, what it takes to guide in polar bear country, and why these remote landscapes continue to shape everyone who experiences them. Whether you’re curious about Arctic safaris, conservation, or what it’s really like to walk in polar bear territory, this interview offers a rare and authentic glimpse into one of the world’s most extraordinary adventures.MORE: https://churchillwild.com/https://www.wesaidgotravel.com/churchill-wild-2024/https://www.wesaidgotravel.com/polar-bear-safari-churchill-wild-2024/https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLv_jKkCiDQcQ9eCEyLewMLRRj45jFoNi6https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLv_jKkCiDQcRzCsSyzfa6MS69qxHYSN5Thttps://www.wesaidgotravel.com/tell-me-more-about-walking-with-polar-bears/https://pasadenamag.com/feature/luxury-meets-wilderness-on-this-canadian-arctic-safari/

Secrets Bahia Mita on The Jet Set TV with Lisa Niver

Secrets Bahia Mita on The Jet Set TV with Lisa Niver

I spoke with Nikki Noya on The Jet Set TV about my incredible stay at Secrets Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort in Riviera Nayarit. From Sky Bar cabanas and whale watching to sunset hula hooping, birthday celebrations, and unforgettable dining, this adults-only, all-inclusive escape—part of Hyatt’s Inclusive Collection—truly exceeded every expectation. 🌴✨

https://www.wesaidgotravel.com/secrets-bahia-mita/

In my interview on The Jet Set TV, I shared why Secrets Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort in Riviera Nayarit was such an unforgettable experience. This adults-only, all-inclusive property—part of Hyatt’s Inclusive Collection—offered the perfect mix of relaxation, celebration, and adventure. My suite was extraordinary, with over 1,000 square feet of space, a plunge pool, wraparound balcony, and sweeping ocean views. One of my favorite memories was hula hooping at sunset during our private mixology class on the balcony.

Celebrating Heather’s birthday at the resort was pure joy. From songs and shots at breakfast to a surprise cake at dinner, the staff turned every moment into a celebration. Our Sky Bar cabana days were equally special: drinks delivered poolside, surprise Oreo ice cream sandwiches, whale watching from our loungers, and even a sunglass concierge to keep everything crystal clear. Team members like Regina, Angelo, Efrain, and Julio went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and cared for.

And then there was the food—fresh lunches at Olio and Sky Bar, perfect steaks at Bluewater Grill, Mediterranean flavors at Mezze, and plenty of birthday cheer everywhere we dined. Evenings brought karaoke at Koi Bar, fireworks from nearby celebrations, and whale and dolphin sightings along the coast. Secrets Bahia Mita isn’t just a resort—it’s a place where every detail adds up to a joyful, luxurious escape that I’ll never forget.

SIDELINE SISTERS E86 Lisa Niver takes small steps toward feeling brave and finding joyhttps://youtu.be/hSqkVQsanlULisa Niver is a Telly Award-winning travel journalist, TV host, and author of the award-winning memoir Brave-ish: One Breakup, Six Continents, and Feeling Fearless After Fifty. She’s explored over 100 countries on all seven continents, with bylines in USA Today 10Best, The Los Angeles Times, and WIRED. Host of the podcast Make Your Own Map, Lisa inspires audiences worldwide through her bold adventures, powerful storytelling, and passion for reinvention.

Lisa's Notes from the Sidelines:

  • Being brave and adventurous have to do with perspective -- how we think of ourselves and the judgement perceived.
  • Small steps lead to big changes.
  • Starting over is hard... no matter how many times you've done it.
  • Like scuba diving, in life, when we have challenges, we need to lean on a buddy. So reach out, take small steps, and find a buddy.
  • You can't do new things in an old way.
  • Acknowledgement and winning is validating, especially when you do your work alone and don't know if it's impactful.
  • Find what makes you happy and do it. It is much easier with the internet to find your people.
  • Travel lets you learn new things and gives you the opportunity for perspective.
  • You can have a travel experience without ever getting on a plane. Explore your own city.
  • Be kind to yourself. It's easy to label yourself a failure, but we don't call a baby a failure when it's learning to walk.
  • When someone says no to you, maybe it means something better is coming.🎙️Listen to Sideline Sisters podcast on your favorite app: https://pod.link/1709566379🌐Check Jentle Coaching website: www.jentlecoaching.com👉Follow @jentlecoaching on Instagram: www.instagram.com/jentlecoaching

Tara Schuster Isn’t Afraid to Go There—And You’ll Be Glad She Did

Talking with Tara Schuster is like opening a book where every page feels somehow meant for you. And in this case, it was literally true—I wanted to ask her about nearly every chapter of her powerful, honest, and often hilarious books: Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies and Glow in the F*cking Dark.

Every story she shares—whether it’s about healing from trauma, battling imposter syndrome or navigating messy relationships—feels like a lifeline. You’ll laugh, you’ll nod, you might cry, and you’ll definitely want to grab a pen and start journaling.

Hope you enjoy our interview!

Leading the Way: An Antarctic Expedition with Ryan McDevitt on Quark Ultramarine

When Ryan McDevitt first stepped aboard a Quark Expeditions voyage in 2017, it was as a guest looking for adventure. But somewhere between the icy waters, endless skies, and silent, snow-covered landscapes, something shifted. He was hooked—not just on Antarctica, but on expedition travel itself.

What began as a personal journey quickly evolved into a professional path. After starting in guest services, Ryan worked across different ships and roles, steadily gaining experience in the field. He trained through Quark Academy—Quark’s training program which is now unique, land-based in Ushuaia, Argentina, where future guides learn the art of driving Zodiacs, leading landings, and managing safety in some of the world’s most extreme conditions. It’s a powerful part of what makes Quark’s team so strong. I loved sailing South of the Antarctic Circle Jan 7-19 2025 on Quark Ultramarine with Ryan as my expedition leader! Teen-Tested, Tech-Approved: My Genesis Road Trip to Death Valley on The Tech Show

Teen-Tested, Tech-Approved: My Genesis Road Trip to Death Valley on The Tech Show

Thanks to The Tech Show for having me! Host Sonya Gavankar leads this American television show, covering everything from the latest in tech news to apps, gadgets, and video games.

I had a great time sharing my Death Valley road trip experience—an adventure in a high-tech Genesis G80 with my friend, who I worked with on cruise ships and scuba dived with—so she’s no stranger to adventure! She brought her two teens along, and we put this luxury sedan to the ultimate test.

Death Valley is the largest national park in the contiguous United States, as well as the hottest, driest, and lowest of all the national parks in the country. That meant we needed a car that could handle the extreme conditions—enter the Genesis G80. It’s safe, tech-forward, and most importantly, spacious enough for two teens! Even when GPS failed and our phones lost service, the car’s tech (and a good old-fashioned ranger paper map) helped us navigate to our next stop and hotel.

But the adventure didn’t stop there! For our next road trip, we took a Genesis GV70 to Joshua Tree, exploring even more stunning desert landscapes. (Links in the notes for all the details!)

Luxury met adventure, and the Genesis lineup proved to be the ultimate road trip companion—smart, stylish, and reliable even in the most extreme conditions.

Would you trust a high-tech car to guide you through the desert? Let’s talk road trips! 🚗🌵

QUOTES FROM MY INTERVIEW WITH ALEX:

"I wanted to be in the fashion industry for as long as I can remember. I wanted to own my own business since I was 6."

"What is the worst that can happen? I took three months off and wouldn't have a job when I got back, and that actually did happen."

"Traveling is refreshing and rejuvenating. Just a little more challenging to get up and go nowadays."

"Reflecting on the person who did that originally and how brave I was then... Looking back at 25-year-old me, I think—WOW! you did that."

"It's always worth the risk and I thought, well, what's the worst that can happen?"

Small Steps to Begin Again at Stephen Wise Temple

Small Steps to Begin Again at Stephen Wise Temple

This is a recording of my talk at Stephen Wise Temple about my memoir, Brave-ish: One Breakup, Six Continents and Feeling Fearless After Fifty, for Shabbat.

I wanted to share it as my book is now out for nearly a year. It has been such an incredible time of events, interviews and awards.

FROM STEPHEN WISE TEMPLE

Travel writer, author, podcaster, and Stephen Wise Temple Board member Lisa Niver, who just released her memoir, Brave-ish: One Breakup, Six Continents, and Feeling Fearless After Fifty, shared about her steps to Begin Again on Sept 29, 2023 for Shabbat and Sukkot. Lisa's memoir debuted as the top solo travel title on Amazon.com when it was released on Sept. 19. Her podcast, Make Your Own Map, launched this summer and has been watched on six continents. It was a finalist for two Southern California Journalism Awards in 2023. Elected this summer as a Congregational Director, Lisa is a graduate of Wise’s religious school program. Wise’s founder, Rabbi Isaiah Zeldin, officiated her bat mitzvah. She began her “nomadic” lifestyle by spending a summer in Israel on LA Ulpan, and went on to study abroad in Jerusalem at Hebrew University. She returned to Israel with her family for Rabbi Zeldin’s 80th birthday celebration. As a journalist, Lisa often shares articles about Wise clergy and services, most often through her column in the Jewish Journal. Lisa has taught religious school at Wise and science at Brawerman Elementary, and has spoken at Wise about the Jews of Morocco. Through the Jewish Federation, Lisa was part of the Rautenberg New Leaders Project and a mentor for the Julie Beren Platt Teen Innovation Grants Program.

Heroes of the Holocaust: A Small Light

Heroes of the Holocaust: A Small Light

Thank you Tony Phelan and Joan Rater for creating the moving and mesmerizing limited series, A Small Light about Miep Gies, who hid the Frank family from the Nazis during the Holocaust in Amsterdam. I met them at a Jewish Federation Los Angeles screening at UTA and at Stephen Wise Temple. Joan Rater told the audience, "People make choices and choices make history." Miep Gies believed she was just an ordinary person who made a choice that anyone would make but we know that is not true. Would we choose to help? As Miep would say, "We can all turn on a small light in a dark room."
