Since year 2017, Russian special service FSB has moved to destroy the anarchist and anti-fascist movements by opening ”anti-terrorist” criminal cases, and torturing victims to confessions. Repressions gained momentum after Russian invasion against Ukraine in 2022, number of anarchists affinity groups and individuals have been arrested andsentenced to long prison sentences due to planning and executing anti-war sabotage, and spreading anti-war message. What can be done to support anarchist prisoners in Russia now?

Antti Rautiainen lived in Russia 1999-2012, until he was deported, accused of ”endangering security of Russian federation”. In Russia, he was participating to anarchist initiatives to support prisoners, and other activities, and he has been involved in solidarity work also after his deportation

Οι κατασταλτικές επιχειρήσεις επιταχύνθηκαν μετά τη ρωσική εισβολή στην Ουκρανία το 2022, με πολλές αναρχικές ομάδες ή ατομικότητεςνα έχουν συλληφθεί και καταδικαστεί σε μακροχρόνιες ποινές φυλάκισης λόγω σχεδιασμού και εκτέλεσης αντιπολεμικού σαμποτάζ και διάδοσης αντιπολεμικώνμηνυμάτων. Τι μπορεί να γίνει για την υποστήριξη των αναρχικών κρατουμένωνστη Ρωσία τώρα;ΟAntti Rautiainen έζησε στη Ρωσία από το 1999 έως το 2012, μέχρι την απέλασή του, κατηγορούμενος για «έκθεση σε κίνδυνο της ασφάλειας της Ρωσικής Ομοσπονδίας». Στη Ρωσία, συμμετείχε σε αναρχικές πρωτοβουλίες για την υποστήριξη κρατουμένων και σε άλλες δραστηριότητες ενώ συμμετείχε σε διάφορες δράσεις αλληλεγγύης καιμετά την απέλασή του.

A veteran of the anarchist and anti-fascist movement of Ukraine, Maxim Butkevich, has been a prisoner of war of the Russian army for two years.
There are several ways to be an anarchist. An anarchist can, for example, be an underground fighter and go into direct conflict with the authorities in every area. But an anarchist can also seek maximum opportunities to influence society through public means, but without trying to take power. This is why many anarchists get into journalism or human rights advocacy. Max did both, and excelled.

Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

On April 19, Dmitry Petrov, a Russian anarchist fighting on the side of Ukraine, died in battle near Bakhmut.

For almost twenty years, Dima contributed immensely to the anarchist movement in Russia and Ukraine. Dima was, first and foremost, a person of action, not a theoretician. Although, a rather interesting synthesis of ideas was also observable in his practice that deserves broad discussion within the anarchist movement and will now need to be further developed without him.

I began to write this text immediately after Dima’s death was confirmed, but the text dragged on, and in the meantime, a lot had already been said. Therefore, I will concentrate on those aspects of Dima’s activities that have been written about less so far, namely his student activism and other (semi-)open projects in Moscow in the 2000s, his religious views, and the first stages of his underground activities.

Last September, some Italian anarchists published a collective letter criticising Ukrainian anarchists for defending themselves and their movement against Russian imperialist aggression.

The argument is based on both ethical and factual points. I will start by commenting on the latter, as unfortunately it seems like these comrades have fallen into an alternative reality, shaped by Russia Today and other Russian-sponsored social media disinformation.
