Kenyan Stories with Daniel Duwa — Shamim - The Hands That Dream in Color
Kenyan Stories with Daniel Duwa — Shamim: The Hands That Dream in Color
She designs systems and paints poetry on skin in brilliant Henna art.
An engineer. An artist. A woman who refuses to live in one dimension. In this episode, Daniel takes a walk with Shamim, the visionary behind enchanting henna creations that have graced weddings, cultural ceremonies, and bold personal expressions. Her journey is a testament to what happens when precision meets imagination — where mathematics transforms into flowing vines, and ambition becomes wearable art.
Shamim opens up about the craft that shaped her confidence, the discipline that engineering demanded, and the joy of seeing people light up when her designs settle into their skin. Along the way, we discover a story of movement — a Kenyan woman stepping boldly into every space that calls her, refusing to choose between brilliance and beauty.
This is the story of hands that don’t just decorate — they define.
A life drawn line by line, with intention.

Kenyan Stories by Daniel Duwa speaks Beraccah Kisia - African Most Punk Artist
Beraccah Kisia is a Kenyan-born folk singer and songwriter whose relationship with music began long before she understood it as a craft. From echoing her mother’s improvised chore songs as a toddler to composing her first piece at nine, her voice has always carried a sense of honesty and emotional intelligence.
She later studied music at George Fox University before returning home, where she expanded her work into music education — teaching privately and coaching emerging talent at the Kenya Conservatoire of Music and through the Katangoma Music and Movement Arts Program. Her approach blends technique, storytelling, and sensitivity to the emotional spaces artists occupy.
Performing under the pseudonym August Cellars, she released her first album in 2012 and has since become a familiar presence on stages across Kenya, including Industry Night, Thursday Night Live at Choices, Women in Music Forum, Sama Eden, Blankets & Wine, and the Nairobi Rock Showcase. Her discography includes The Mountain EP and Special Day, the lead single from her upcoming project, The Journey EP.
Beraccah’s sound draws from country, rock, blues, and ’80s pop — shaped by influences like Joan Armatrading and Sade, women of colour who carved out space for alternative, emotionally restorative music. In that lineage, Beraccah continues to build a catalogue defined by purity of tone, depth, and storytelling that feels lived-in.

Kenyan Stories by Daniel Duwa — Show Extra
Throwback - The Lost Files - Mandela - Poetry A rare pull from the archives: a lost-file moment featuring Mandela at Kenyan Music Week—an event where I played a pivotal role in shaping the platform, the culture, and the talent that rose from it.
These were the years we built a creative home from scratch, fostered artists with range and discipline, and shifted the sound of a generation. This Show Extra captures that spirit: the behind-the-scenes history, the voices that defined the era, and the journey of documenting Kenyan brilliance with clarity and intention.
Still telling our stories. Still growing the talent that carries them forward.

Kenya Stories by Daniel Duwa #podcasts - Fashionista & Iconic Olive Gachara
Olive Gachara
My guest today is the iconic Fashionista & Iconic Olive Gachara. I meet her when we were dreamy kids running around the city trying to make our mark. And her mark she made. She was a big part of redefining fashion in Kenya. She also spread her wings all over the continent and has been a trailblazer over the years.
You catch us in a conversation we had over a decade ago, I recorded it on a first-generation mobile phone.
Please enjoy it.
Regards,
Daniel.

Kenyan Stories by Daniel Duwa - Georgina Goodwin - A Legendary Photographer Navigating Unchartered Life Paths
Kenyan Stories by Daniel Duwa - Georgina Goodwin - A Legendary Photographer Navigating Uncharted Life Paths
Georgina Goodwin is an award-winning world-class documentary/nature and editorial photographer and Canon Ambassador 2018–2020 born and based in Kenya. She has covered conflicts, been a humanitarian, and creative entrepreneur, and is passionate about the communities.
She opens up in this episode, as her life takes a dramatic turn. In this Kenyan Story, you will eavesdrop on a journey that spans over two decades. It’s unlike any other convention founder story and more like two long-lost friends catching unpin real-time and you come along for the journey. I would like to thank Georgina for her time, for introducing us to her family, and for sharing her life so candidly with us.
Her work, which has been widely published and exhibited in major cities around the world, focuses on women, refugees, social issues, and the environment.
Georgina is a Certified Canon Trainer, TEDx speaker, and industry mentor. She is the founder of GGImages Media agency working with local talent across Africa (and the World), and co-founder of AfricaFotoChat, a platform to connect African photographers to the global industry.

Kenyan Stories by Daniel Duwa Ann Mitu -Sixth Most Influential Woman on Earth
Ann Mitu -Sixth Most Influential Woman on Earth
Ann has been my mentee since she was 19 years old young mother. She approached me, a film producer, and when we were done, she was nominated for an Emmy Award, Television's most valued award. We journeyed on, working on her next dream, Young Mothers Africa which landed her in the crosshairs of Melinda Gates, who crowned her, Ann, the sixth most influential woman on earth ( https://bit.ly/3tzkDHn )
I salute Ann and can't wait to mentee her and many more women in their live journey, finding purpose and their next 5 Steps.
You know you are doing something right when Melinda Gates writes about your mentee in Elle Magazine, one of the most celebrated publications. ( https://bit.ly/3E5Xlhl)

Kenyan Stories by Daniel Duwa This Is Dead Prez American Mega Hip Hop Duo Live
Dead Prez
Dead Prez, is an American hip-hop duo composed of Stic Man & M-1, formed in 1996 in New York City. They are known for their confrontational style, combined with lyrics focused on both militant social justice, self-determination, and Pan-Africanism. I should not have a favorite, but my favorite song by the duo is Mind Sex, a hip-hop takes on sensual love I think. Enjoy the performance.

Kenyan Stories by Daniel Duwa Speaks Kyle and Medina A Love Story Worthy Of A Novel
Karl & Medina - A Love Story
The Khans
My guests today are a couple whose love story is inflating as they embark on a four-year tour of the world.
Kyle is American while Madina is Canadian both with Pakistani heritage.
I caught them on their Kenyan leg of this amazing world tour. They were gracious enough to make time for me for this conversation.
Just a heads up, they finish each other's sentences, however as you will hear, their journey has not been paved on smooth paths.
Also, I am left with an invaluable impression of how great ambassadors for Kenyan tourism the Khans are. While I was walling in a rarely stormy capital, Karl & Madina were at the resort town of Mombasa, enjoying a beautiful property overlooking the ocean. That explains the breeze (I cleaned it out best I could). With that out of the way, let's get into it.
Please enjoy my conversation with the Khans. Also, go on the socials and show them some love @KhanQuest
