On today's Utcast, we discover the bulge that's blocking men in 2026 before releasing the green slime origin on everybody. Currently Playing - 25 - Mina the Hollower and StarFox '26 with Fox and Marcy of FYHOD
I headed to a sleepy coastal town on Lake Michigan to hang out with some of the crew from the Fix Your Heart or Die podcast and along the way we figured we might as well get some content on the books. For the first time ever, 2 guests in-studio gathered together to talk Mina the Hollower and StarFox '26 (along with some guesses regarding the future release of Ocarina of Time '26). The mostly free form chat is a sort of "warts and all" podcast with a few disruptions from Waldo the cat, and plenty of technical glitches you only get from recording locally, but it was cool to get face to face on the topic of video games. After this chat, I got the chance to play StarFox '26 and my thoughts are "this sure is StarFox 64 with a coat of paint!" But for more in depth analysis, you'll have to listen to this episode.

Maximum Utcast - 25 - A Zoo For Kittens, Horses, Lynx, Foxes, and Dragons
Take a walk on the wild side with the Maximum Utcast as we tour through the menagerie of exotic beasts. We talk mildly about GTA6 and wildly about Red Dead Redemption 2's horse ball physics before opening the floor to a great debate about the N64 vs. the PS1. Later, the state of the Atari Lynx is discussed and we go deep on Mega Man. Sarah Carapace visits the show to discuss some of the identity crisis facing the Double Dragon series, while focusing on the game Double Dragon Advance (read more about that at the link below). Sweary 65 gets invoked and then we try to find the connections between Chibi Robo, Toy Story, and Small Soldiers.

On this episode which was recorded on Father's Day, Jonathan and Ryan switch places (sorta). Later the pair are joined by Jonathan's other son Charles to talk about Mina the Hollower and along the way, we stop over in Star Fox and Minecraft Dungeons 2 country. Currently Playing - 24 - Baldur's Gate 3 with Aysha Farah
Aysha Farah (writer of Life is Strange, Pathologic, Hiveswap and so much more) and podcaster with Workers' Lit and All My Maidens stopped by to talk about exactly how deep down the rabbit hole she's gone with Baldur's Gate 3. From her first run to her recent completion (?) of the For Honor Mode, we get into a game that both she and Daniel love and how it could be improved because not everything is perfect. This one is for the real Baldur's Gate 3 sickos. Also as a warning, the episode does contain a few narrative spoilers for some of the main quests in Baldur's Gate 3.

Maximum Utcast - 22 - Cosmic Stakes vs. Bloody Death Fights
What is real? Are the memories you make attending a summer camp real or are they implanted in your mind by a Hollywood movie? Did you write the news or did the news write you? Have you ever been in a fight, only to find out that you were alone in your Batcave? Is a light gun a joystick, or was it the Mandela Effect all along? These questions and more will be answered as answers will be questioned on this week's episode of the Maximum Utcast. James Interactive stops by to talk with Jonathan about their upcoming game Screaming Savage Blood Death (watch the video!) and elsewhere, we pontificate on the cosmic nature of media.

Currently Playing - 23 - Pragmata with Xzyliac
Forum fixture Xyliac joins Daniel to talk about video games and Texas and where the two intersect. From forming community podcasts to starting online disinformation campaigns, Xzyliac has been woven into the fabric of the internet and has her pulse on the beating heart of video game news for some time now. We get into Pragmata, but only after really getting to know her passion for space and exploration games like Starfield and No Man's Sky. There's also a divergence to Spider-Man 2, which we kind of spoil a bit from the ending of, so watch out for that if you haven't played Spider-Man 2 yet. And then we wrap with a bit of X-Men chat. Maximum Utcast - 19 - The Objectifying, Vectifying, 'Dead Man'-ifying, Street Fighting Special!
On this thrilling! (is it love?) episode of the Maximum Utcast, Zoey performs a cunning stunt in the form of a live videogame unboxing before Jonathan regales us with tales of being bombarded with requests for pics despite no one understanding his cosplay. We go deep on Street Fighter lore because something's up with Alex. Later, Jonathan chats with Cherrybombrs and Bbbbbbeatle about their experiences with Romeo is a Dead Man (also available as a video on our YouTube channel). Finally, we round out the chat in the usual way by having a freewheeling discussion of videogames past, present, and future (Super Meat Boy 3D, Moves of the Diamond Hand, Pokemon, Cadash, and more).

Maximum Utcast - 17 - Lovish-ing the Journey to the West
On this jam packed episode of Maximum Utcast we're digging into the kusoge Ganso Saiyūki: Super Monkey Daibōken, a Famicom game based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West that is sometimes known as the ultimate crappy game. Along the way we discover secret vaginas and penises that have infiltrated games for dozens of years. Later, Jonathan talks with Matt Kap (Castle in the Darkness 2, Astalon: Tears of the Earth), developer of Lovish about his love of little blue knights. We get a little extra information about Jonathan's experiences with Love Eternal (SPOILER WARNING!) and in the post-show, Daniel practices some vocal warmups.

It took 15 episodes but we finally know how to make the perfect podcast! We're abiding by the rules, correcting our past mistakes, and disclosing any potential conflicts of interest which means no one can say we're doing it wrong! Jonathan talked with game developer Talha Kaya of Talha & Jack Co. about their new game ABIDE which brings a unique art style to the first person horror game experience. Elsewhere, Zoey corrects her prior error regarding the continuity of the Castlevania series by doing a deep dive on the original game's Japanese manual. We get a few updates from what games Jonathan and Zoey are playing (Beastieball and the Pragmata demo) plus we learn that disclosures can be like farts.

Talking to My Boy About Videogames - 17 - Changing the Game
Do you want more of the same or things to be vastly different? It's the question central to today's episode of Talking to My Boy About Videogames where Jonathan and Ryan look at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Blippo+, two games set on alien worlds that introduce the audience to their setting through exploration and perception. Elsewhere in the episode, Ryan gives us his monthly Minecraft Report and there's a little bit of talk about Nobi Nobi Boy, plus evil doppelgangers seem to be everywhere you look. Boys will become men on this thrilling episode!

Maximum Utcast - 10 - Crossing Into Alternate Worlds
We're stepping into an alternate reality on this episode of the Maximum Utcast where Jonathan Holmes talks to John-Charles Holmes about the game Blippo+ where you watch TV from another dimension. But before that, Zoey tells us about finally beating the professional beetles in Beetle Adventure Racing. Then we debut our new permanent segment on the show, The Duke Nukem Report. Later in the show we talk about novelty fatigue and how perhaps you can only be weird once. Very late in the episode we get extremely off topic by talking about some Star Trek The Next Generation fever dreams.

Currently Playing - 17 - Marvel Rivals with Aisling
Currently Playing returns with Aisling (pronounced Ash-lyn) to talk about her time spent rivaling in the Marvel-verse in Marvel Rivals. We go deep on the roster of this hero shooter and learn about the thigh physics keeping this game afloat. Plus: what's the deal with Wolverine? How many sisters does Thor have? And what happens to Gambit's package? We also get to hear Daniel's thoughts on Hotline Miami 2 before Aisling challenges Daniel to...perhaps the final Backlog challenge (??) in the form of Axiom Verge.

On this Mega episode of the Maximum Utcast, we're talking all things Mega Man with our resident Mega Man expert, Tony Ponce. But first, a quick stop off to the world of Katamari for Once Upon a Katamari in our new segment "Good Feels." We also learn a bit of behind the scenes drama with regards to the official Destructoid Top Megaman Games list, and we hear Jonathan's idea for a new Bonk video game, which will apparently be very easy to make!

Maximum Utcast - 08 - Is It "Time To Kill" Grand Theft Auto 6?
This week we're talking about the bad boys and girls of videogames with Grand Theft Auto 6, a game that's too big to fail, or so says our guest Rose. But first we get into a forgotten corner of the Duke Nukem universe on PS1 when Duke tried to be Lara Croft? Are the pig cops supposed to be cops or aliens? Who knows?!? Later, Jonathan and Zoey try to find out why they play videogames and maybe we learn a bit too much about Jonathan's private life.

Currently Playing - 16 - Baldur's Gate 3 with Jonathan
This month on Currently Playing, Daniel is joined by Jonathan (not that one) to talk about the intersectionality of video games and table top role playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Penumbra City, Blades in the Dark, Vampire the Masquerade and more. And what better way to frame this TTRPG discussion than by discussing the video game Baldur's Gate 3 which uses Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition as the basis of the gameplay? Peppered throughout the chat are comparisons between "real" D&D and the videogame version, along with stories from table top campaigns and the campaign presented by Larian Studios. There are some spoilers for story beats in Acts 1 and 2 of Baldur's Gate 3, but since Jonathan hasn't finished Act 2 yet, we avoid Act 3 entirely.

Maximum Utcast - 07 - Shantae Advances the WayForward into Our Hearts and Minds
On this thicc episode of the Maximum Utcast, Jonathan interviews Matt Bozon and Michael Stragey of WayForward about their game Shantae Advance that originally began development over 20 years ago as a GBA game only to be shelved indefinitely before being revived this year. Shantae Advance finally got released this year on actual GBA cartridges through Limited Run Games or available digitally just about everywhere else. Jonathan also makes a plea for a sequel to Boogerman (which Michael produced and programmed). Later, Jonathan and Zoey talk about what a sequel to Boogerman might look like and we also reveal that this show has potentially always been an Earthworm Jim fan cast? Jonathan and Ryan dive deep into the world of UFO 50, but only after a few stops along the way to talk about Among Us, cats, and Iron Mike Sharpe. What does it mean to be you in a world of false memories? This episode of the Maximum Utcast sees Zoey become the Segue Police, Jonathan sings good but does a bad Schwarzenegger impression, and Daniel updates us on the bathroom situation in Germany.
We talk extensively about the kusoge Total Recall on the NES, then Jonathan interviews Tanya (former host of Talking to Women about Videogames) to learn what it's like to play videogames as a "normie." Most of central Europe doesn't make it out of this one unscathed. For the memory of a lifetime, Rekall, Rekall, Rekall...

Currently Playing - 15 – World of Warcraft with Evan Hilliard
Daniel is joined this month by Evan, an old pal from college and a recent father who has found his time for gaming evaporate, but he's still able to find some time to participate in the genre defining MMO World of Warcraft, which he's been playing consistently since launch, now in it's 21st year. They discuss what it's like for Evan to be married to a popular Twitch streamer.
Evan gets into the game's longevity and what keeps people coming back for so long, but it's also revealed to maybe not be a great thing for people to try jumping into at this point in the game's history if they're not familiar with MMOs.
In the backlog section, they recap King's Quest (2015) and Evan challenges Daniel to play the arcade-y Sega classic Shinobi 3. They also have a bit of a general chat about old games and remakes/sequels meant for people in their 40s.

Talking to My Boy About Videogames - 14 - Are Toys More Exciting than Videogames?
Jonathan and Ryan react to the latest Nintendo Direct which had a lot of Pokemon news, a lot of Amiibo news, and strangely enough, a lot of Virtual Boy news. Despite the newness of the news though, Jonathan seems to think it was mostly old stuff that's not new or exciting, but still kinda cool. Jonathan is also incapable of saying the names of the games Pokopia and Popucom, which are tricky and sound too similar to each other. There's a bit of analysis about Ryan's fear of dying in video games as opposed to his fearlessness of real life violence and we learn that an over abundance of video games might make them feel less special.

If you're tired of magazines, you might be suffering from debilitating Mix-a-Lot-ism, a newly discovered illness affecting adults aged 18-65 all across the world! And this Maximum Utcast might be the thing to cure what ails you. Zoey and Jonathan are haunted by a few ghosts on this episode as they discuss American Gladiators on the NES before getting to the bottom of swinging mechanics in video games...are they really gone for good? Later, Daniel chats with Allen Ortega from Mob Entertainment (Poppy Playtime) about his love of the Borderlands series and how it helped him realize a lot about himself and get his foot in the door of the games industry.

Currently Playing - 14 - The Warriors with Beith
Currently Playing returns with guest Beith talking about the classic PS2-era game The Warriors from Rockstar, a videogame retelling of the classic 1979 film and 1965 book of the same name. Beith goes deep on his research, finding it to be a missing link between Rockstar's GTA series and their next big game, Bully. There is a lot of spoiler filled discussion of the film and how it contrasts with the game, so if you'd like to see the movie be sure to track that down on the streaming platform of your choice, or play the game on modern consoles...it covers a lot of the same ground, naratively.
In the backlog phases of the show, Daniel shares his thoughts on Astro Bot, which he thought was not as revolutionary as many other people did, and then Beith challenged Daniel to play King's Quest (2015) starring Christopher Lloyd as Old King Graham in this modernization of a classic Sierra point and click adventure...that maybe strays a bit from the path?

We pre-taped this episode so Daniel could skip town for a few days which meant we did one entirely without Jonathan--but fear not! We have an overstuffed episode with representatives from all parts of the animal kingdom, from the mighty Crazy Frog to the lowly Solid Snake as well as the tricky Donkey Kong and the strange Earthworm Jim. We maybe get to the bottom of who killed the Noid, and also talk a little bit about Rugrats. A Shy Fox stops by to give his thoughts on few recent game demos (Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales and Mina the Hollower) and we even get 2 kusoges for the price of one...it's a deal you can't beat!

Talking to My Boy About Videogames - 13 - Bubsy is the New B Word
On this energetic episode, Jonathan and Ryan watched the Kirby Air Riders Direct and the trailers from Gamescom and broke things down to their respective mans: Batman, He-Man, Kirby Man, or Bubsy Man, and decided which one is best...or did they? Will we ever know for sure? Only time can tell, but Ryan's favorite is clearly Rufus the cat.
