How Marcel helped scale a boutique from zero to 20+ people
Why discipline, routines, and soft skills matter more than technical brilliance

How to manage your time wisely and successfully balance your IB workload with Peter Shin, MD at Stifel
Welcome to Episode 8 of The Investment Banking Leaders Podcast, hosted by Altrum’s Deal Toy Global Head, Peter Nieberg! Our mission is to connect as many of you with successful investment banking leaders as possible.
We can’t believe we’ve reached the end of Series 1 already. Our final episode for this series features an amazing guest, Peter Shin, Managing Director at Stifel Financial Corporation in London. Peter has loads of impressive experience in the industry, starting his career off at UBS Investment Bank as an Analyst. After that, Peter worked his way up through different firms such as KPMG, Piper Jaffray, Nomura International, and Mooreland Partners, ultimately setting him up for success in his leadership role at Stifel. His rapid ascent to the top, going from Analyst to MD in just 11 years, showcases his determination and sheer talent in the industry.
If you’re interested in hearing a fun fact about Peter, we have a great one for you. After competing in range shooting at university, Peter obtained a license to teach others how to shoot guns. While he doesn’t use the license or practice often due to life getting in the way, he says it is quite a fun fact to bring up at client events!
All banks work differently, but Peter’s advice for analysts is relevant to all. Trying to understand the big picture is key; don’t let yourself get absorbed in the minutia of what you need to do without actually understanding why. This is not helpful for your career at all; there should be a healthy balance between the production and the understanding of a task! Another key tip, do your best to not get overwhelmed by the intensity of working on a specific deal. Spiraling with worry will only set you back further – try to see the light at the end of the tunnel, push through and give it your all!

Sher shared an unexpected fun fact with us; as a kid, between first and twelfth grade, he moved quite a lot. Because his father was a diplomat, Sher’s family traveled frequently, and he had to change schools about 7 times. His childhood experiences helped him learn how to assimilate quickly and grow in new, nerve-wracking environments.
For those more junior in the industry, Sher says it is especially important to go with the flow and keep up with the times. How can you find the right mentor in IB and network like a boss? With Charles Godbout, Partner & MD at PwC
Welcome to Episode 5 of The Investment Banking Leaders Podcast, hosted by Altrum’s Deal Toy Global Head, Peter Nieberg! Our mission is to connect as many of you with successful investment banking leaders as possible.
We are more than halfway through Series 1! For this week’s episode, our guest is Charles Godbout, Partner, and Managing Director at PwC Corporate Finance in Montreal, Canada. With over 20 years of experience in the IB industry, Charles focuses on M&A, divestitures, debt, and equity raises, LBOs, and MBOs. Charles started his career with PwC in 2003, working his way up through the years to make Partner in 2016, so he knows a thing or two about loyalty, growth, and development!
Something you may not have expected about Charles is his love for a good time; he credits this to his more Latin blood, growing up in Montreal with French as his first language. Yes, bankers like to have fun too! He is known for dressing up in costumes whenever he gets the chance, his basement full of extravagant ensembles from different eras that he likes to whip out for some laughs around the office.
We spoke to Charles about how he fosters a positive company culture at PwC, and he had great insights. In his words, if you’re putting in those long hours, work has to be fun. Focusing on key values like loyalty, teamwork, and respect helped to reduce turnover and create an overall better culture. Due to remote work taking over the world after the COVID-19 pandemic, rebuilding company culture has been one of the biggest challenges to Charles. Returning to those values has been paramount in rebuilding the strong culture he knows and loves at PwC.

How can juniors in IB have a big impact on their firms? Insight and advice with Rusty Ray, Managing Partner at Alantra
Welcome to Episode 4 of the Investment Banking Leaders Podcast hosted by Altrum’s Deal Toy Global Head, Peter Nieberg! Our mission is to connect as many of you with successful investment banking leaders as possible.
Episode 4’s guest is Rusty Ray, Managing Partner at Alantra. His career began at Brocair Partners, where he led M&A, recaps, and private placements. Rusty specializes in the healthcare sector and has amassed over 20 years of experience in the investment banking industry. Joining Alantra in 2019, Rusty is an expert in his field and deeply understands all things biosciences, pharma, life sciences, and medical devices.
While Rusty encourages all to take a break from work and unplug from the day-to-day tasks that come with the territory, he knows it can be tough to leave work at the door when you get home. One of his favorite ways to refresh and take time for himself is to start the day off with a morning workout; really focusing on yourself in that moment will allow you to bring your all later in the office.
One of the best pieces of advice Rusty gave us in this episode was to be open. Everyone has their roles, but it is important to be as flat as one can be in terms of an organizational hierarchy; analysts are not expected to go out and generate business, but they should never be dissuaded from taking risks, interfacing with clients, and trying their hand at more advanced work.

Our next guest for this series is truly impressive, being recognized in 2020 as one of the Top 100 Power Businesswomen by Forbes Middle East. Noha El Ghazaly is no stranger to the industry, with over 10 years of experience at HC Securities & Investment, she is now focused on private equity as Managing Director at Mediterrania Capital Partners in Egypt and sits on multiple different boards across the region. It is safe to say that Noha is paving the way for other women in the industry interested in becoming leaders.
While Noha absolutely loves the Investment Banking sphere, she has a super interesting hobby you might not guess; she’s a certified hypnotist! She has also studied neuro-linguistic programming, a set of principles that aims to help us understand human experiences and enhance communication. Noha is up there for one of our favorite fun facts in this series!
Noha’s advice for female listeners? When you find yourself in a meeting room with 15 men, don’t get intimidated. Don’t assume that you are an outsider! There is a reason why you are there, and your contributions are just as important and valuable. Embrace your unique difference as a woman and use it to your advantage.

Secrets to getting hired at J.P. Morgan and advice on transitioning roles smoothly in IB with Gokhan Ozkan, MD Head of Middle East, Turkiye, Africa FIG & EMEA Credit Management Services at J.P. Morgan
Welcome to Episode 1 of The Investment Banking Leaders Podcast hosted by Altrum’s Deal Toy Global Head, Peter Nieberg! Our mission is to connect as many of you with successful investment banking leaders as possible.
For our inaugural episode, we are excited to introduce Gokhan Ozkan, Managing Director & Head of Middle East, Turkiye, Africa FIG & EMEA Credit Management Services at JP Morgan. Gokhan has been with JPM since 2006, working his way up the ranks from intern to MD. With over 17 years of experience, he deeply understands FIG and credit management. He is the head of FIG in Turkey, the Middle East, and Africa and the head of EMEA Credit Management services. Gokhan is very passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping others grow.
A fun fact about him you can’t find online? He loves the NBA! Fascinated with the Golden State Warriors, Gokhan loves success stories. In this episode, he compares team sports to working in Investment Banking – you must be able to work with others and play to each other’s strengths to succeed.
One of the most important things he recommends for success is to observe. As an investment banker, you are exposed to various high-profile leaders across the world. Take note of how they conduct themselves in meetings, how they present, and how they manage situations. Reading is another important skill. Read everything you can, from books to research reports, because the world is constantly changing.
