Unity When We Disagree (Graham Beynon)

Unity When We Disagree (Graham Beynon)

When people in our churches fall out, we need to help them work out how they can stay united in Christ or be reconciled in him.

We need to understand what kind of category of issue we are dealing with, we need to caution people against assigning motives, and help them take responsibility for their side. In this way, we can help people maintain the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace.

In this video, first produced for our 2026 Local Conferences, Graham Beynon (FIEC Associate National Director) shares advice on fostering unity when there is disagreement in the local church.

About the speaker: Graham is one of FIEC's Associate National Directors, helping churches and their leaders by managing FIEC’s team of Local Directors overseeing church planting, and giving advice and training.

About the series: We know that we are united in Christ, who has created ‘one new humanity’ (Ephesians 2:15). That unity is precious and beautiful, but it can also be challenging to live out. These videos help us understand how that can happen, produced for FIEC's 2026 Local Conferences across the country.

About FIEC: We are a fellowship of Independent churches with members of the family across England, Scotland and Wales. Our mission is to see those Independent churches working together with a big vision: to reach Britain for Christ. Find out more: https://fiec.org.uk.

Unity Between Generations (Pete Dray)

Unity Between Generations (Pete Dray)

We will encounter generational differences in church life. But instead of dividing our churches, they can enable us to show what God's people really looks like.

Unlike any other institution, local churches bring people together across the human lifespan. We don't gather because we're at the same age or stage, we gather because we have something deeper in common.

In this video, first produced for our 2026 Local Conferences, Pete Dray (Interim Lead Pastor, Redeemer Church, Leeds) shares advice on fostering unity between generations in the local church.

About the speaker: Peter serves as Interim Lead Pastor at Redeemer Church in Headingley, Leeds. He previously worked in student ministry for two decades, holding a number of roles for UCCF.

About the series: We know that we are united in Christ, who has created ‘one new humanity’ (Ephesians 2:15). That unity is precious and beautiful, but it can also be challenging to live out. Unity Between Genders (Rachel Sloan)

Unity Between Genders (Rachel Sloan)

Unity between brothers and sisters in the church is seen in healthy, respectful relationships between men and women as equal members of the church and co-heirs in Christ.

But what does that look like in church life? How can we move towards better reflecting God's good design of men and women united as God's image bearers?

In this video, first produced for our 2026 Local Conferences, Rachel Sloan (Women's Ministry Coordinator, Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh) shares advice on fostering unity between genders in the local church.

About the speaker: Rachel is one of FIEC's Director for Women's Ministry. She works for FIEC alongside working as Women's Ministry Coordinator for Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh.

About the series: We know that we are united in Christ, who has created ‘one new humanity’ (Ephesians 2:15). That unity is precious and beautiful, but it can also be challenging to live out. Unity Between Cultures (Lucas Coelho)

How can we make sure we are united in Christ across cultures? How can leaders set an example of this in church life?

In this video, first produced for our 2026 Local Conferences, Lucas Coelho (pastor, Sunbridge Road Mission, Bradford) shares advice on fostering unity between cultures in the local church.

About the speaker: Lucas is Pastor (Children & Families) at Sunbridge Road Mission in the centre of Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Welcoming International Students

Welcoming International Students

There are 740,000 students from overseas studying at UK universities: the nations are at our doorstep! Many of these students come from countries where gospel access is difficult or even impossible.

In this seminar, Penny (Friends International) helps us consider how we can welcome overseas visitors who are only here for a short while. And she suggests how we can send back students, especially to places where gospel work is very small or even secret.

This is a seminar from the 2025 FIEC Leaders' Conference held in Blackpool from 10-12 November 2025.

About the speaker: Penny (hidden identity) serves as a Staff Worker for Friends International, growing friendships and faith with international students in the UK.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Short-Term Mission // Mike Smailes

Short-term mission trips sometimes get a bad rep. Others find them wonderfully challenging and life-changing.

Leader-to-Leader, Church-to-Church (Church Leaders as Mission Partners) // Leonardo De Chirico & Emanuel Tundrea

We have moved from the classic mission agency model of detached mission to seeing the value of leader-to-leader and church-to-church connection.

What is the value of us as leaders building relationships with church leaders in the mission field? And how can those connections be truly two-way?

Leonardo De Chirico (Reformanda Initiative) and Emanuel Tundrea (Romanian Christian leader) will show how they have been helped by such connections and give ideas for how churches can maximise connections.

This is a seminar from the 2025 FIEC Leaders' Conference held in Blackpool from 10-12 November 2025.

Welcoming Missionaries to the UK // Chris Hawthorne & Chris Howles

Welcoming Missionaries to the UK // Chris Hawthorne & Chris Howles

In the context of world Christianity, missionaries are sent from many different nations to many different nations.

The UK is now a receiver, not just a sender, of missionaries. Brothers and sisters arrive to plant churches, teach theology, and engage in short-term mission.

How can we welcome those who come to engage in mission work in the UK, to help them best glorify Christ in their work, and help us do the same?

This seminar is led by Chris Hawthorne (Abbey Baptist Church, Oxfordshire) and Chris Howles (Oak Hill College), who have a wide range of mission experience from both a practical and academic perspective, both having served overseas, in Zambia and Uganda respectively.

This seminar was given at the 2025 FIEC Leaders' Conference held in Blackpool from 10-12 November 2025.

About the speakers: Chris Hawthorne is the pastor at Abbey Baptist Church in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Prior to that, he was the principal of Proclamation Institute, Zambia.

Chris Howles is the Director of Cross-Cultural Training at Oak Hill College and previously served as Head of Theology at Uganda Martyrs Seminary, Namugongo.

Mission Impossible? (Those Who Have Never Heard) // Dan Strange

Mission Impossible? (Those Who Have Never Heard) // Dan Strange

What about those who have never heard the gospel? What about those who wholeheartedly (but mistakenly) pursue other religions?

These are two key theological questions for us to wrestle with when it comes to world mission. Can the fate of those who have never heard really be eternal lostness?

Church leaders might know what they think of these issues, but how can they teach their congregations about them? Properly understood, they are an encouragement to mission and the fidelity of the gospel.

Dan Strange, whose doctoral work wrestled with some of these topics, leads this seminar, hosted by the FIEC Theology Team.

This is a seminar from the 2025 FIEC Leaders' Conference held in Blackpool from 10-12 November 2025.

About the speaker: Dr Dan Strange is in theological leadership at The London Project (City to City), co-founder of The Southgate Fellowship, a Fellow at the Keller Center for Cultural Apologetics, and a Contributing Editor for Themelios.

Supporting Planters' Wives // Siân Robinson

Supporting Planters' Wives // Siân Robinson

Life as a planter's wife can be stressful, lonely, and tiring. How can they maintain their joy and continue to thrive in their relationships with God, their husband, and others?

Relationships within the church, pressures on their husband, and spiritual exhaustion can make life as a ministry wife - especially in a church plant - stressful and difficult.

Yet, it is possible for ministry wives to maintain their joy and thrive in their relationships. The start of a new ministry or a church plant can provide a God given opportunity to ensure a ministry wife is cared for and enabled to flourish.

This short talk is from Planters 2025, seeking to share some awareness and orientation in an area church planters should be alert to. You can get a transcript and more resources for church leaders on the FIEC website: https://fiec.org.uk/resources/supporting-planters-wives

Intercultural Church Planting // Rick Raja

Intercultural Church Planting // Rick Raja

How do we appropriately reflect and embody the different cultures in our churches?

Jesus' commission to the church was to make disciples of all nations, to the ends of the earth. To reach all nations, and to serve all nations, we need to better reflect the diverse cultures represented.

But, our cultural lies, blind spots, and biases can be barriers to making this happen, and worse can cause division in the church.

Understanding these barriers can enable us to better understand others, and therefore reach and serve all nations.

This short talk is from Planters 2025, seeking to share some awareness and orientation in an area church planters should be alert to. You can get a transcript and more resources for church leaders on the FIEC website: https://fiec.org.uk/resources/intercultural-church-planting.

A Helpful Feedback Culture // Josh Monteiro

A Helpful Feedback Culture // Josh Monteiro

How can we create good feedback loops and avoid feeling overly sensitive to criticism?

The book of Proverbs encourages us to get wisdom and feedback (Proverbs 15:22, 15:31). It is important to cultivate a culture of feedback in church life to benefit from the wisdom of the whole body of the church.

Such a culture creates an environment where people feel able to bring their concerns and where encouragement and correction are present for all.

This short talk is from Planters 2025, seeking to share some awareness and orientation in an area church planters should be alert to. You can get a transcript and more resources for church leaders on the FIEC website: https://fiec.org.uk/resources/a-helpful-feedback-culture.

Joys and Sorrows // Adrian Reynolds

Joys and Sorrows // Adrian Reynolds

Church ministry is the best work in the world. But in a sense it is the hardest work in the world too.

The nature of Christian ministry is a mixture of the sound of the shouts of joy with the sound of weeping (Ezra 3:13). Sometimes in the same person and even in the same event.

It is a Christian discipline to seek out the joys whilst being realistic about the burdens and committing them to God.

Growing in Godliness // Josh Monteiro

Growing in Godliness // Josh Monteiro

Serving in ministry can be a threat to our godliness. We must keep growing and take care not to wither.

In his pastoral letters, Paul often urges gospel ministers to be godly in their conduct and lives. Being a church leader doesn't mean we stop needing to grow in godliness.

Yet, church ministry itself can make it harder to grow in godliness. It can even cause us to wither instead of grow.

What do we need to look out for? And how can we keep growing?

Prayer needs to be relational, from the heart, and full of awe and wonder.

Prayer can become a function of church ministry, a task we need to get better at.

As we learn to love people, we need to hold onto the Lord of love who loved us first.

Love is a big part of church ministry. It is costly yet joyful, and can only be done as we look to Jesus who loved us first.

The Power for Ministry // John Stevens

The Power for Ministry // John Stevens

It is right to ask whether you have what it takes for church ministry. You don't. But Jesus does and will give you the grace you need.

The "super-apostles" in the Corinthian church saw their power for ministry in physical strength and social status. Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians 11:16-12:10 that true power for ministry comes from Christ, not us.

He is, therefore, able to boast in his sufferings and weakness. Instead of his own ability, he knows and trusts the power of Christ to enable him to do what he is called to.

For those going into church ministry, know that you don't have the power you need. But Jesus does and will supply it in his grace.

This talk is the second of two given by John Stevens, FIEC National Director, at Journeys 2025.

The Purpose of Ministry // John Stevens

The Purpose of Ministry // John Stevens

In 2 Corinthians 11:1-15, Paul sets a pattern for gospel ministry, summarising his work as presenting the church as a faithful bride to Christ.

He teaches what the goal of ministry is, what its heart is, and what the means are by which he works.

As men and women consider going into church ministry, understanding the big picture of the purpose of ministry will help make the right decisions and keep the right motives.

The categories of shepherding and serving // Trusted Hands

The categories of shepherding and serving // Trusted Hands

As we "equip the saints for the work of ministry" (Ephesians 4:12 ESV), how do we identify the right place and way for them to serve?

Everyone has a part to play in church life: men, women, young, old, slaves, masters (Titus 2:1-10).

As we seek to identify places for them to serve and to grow, it is helpful to see two categories of church life: shepherding and serving.

Authority and leadership // Trusted Hands

Authority and leadership // Trusted Hands

To know who should lead in the church and how we should equip them to lead, we need to think about the distinctions between authority and leadership. It's a blessing to have people in our churches willing to volunteer for service in church life.To help us find, identify, and equip volunteers to lead in the church, we need to think about two topics:

  • Authority helps us know who is in charge in the church.
  • Leadership helps clarify who we should follow in the church.

Preaching the book of Job // Eric Ortlund

Many of us are regularly preaching through books of the Bible. Some are more daunting than others, even though we know “all Scripture is useful.” Job is a particularly relevant book as people struggle with the topic of suffering.

Eric Ortlund, lecturer in Old Testament and Hebrew at Oak Hill College, gives a very basic introduction to the joys and challenges of preaching through Job.

This seminar is from the 2024 FIEC Leaders' Conference held in Blackpool from 4-6 November 2024 and was hosted by Daniel Grimwade, FIEC Director for Yorkshire.
