Next, we’ll hear from Cree School Board Director General Caroline Mark as she shares a message for Goose Break. 

We’ll take a moment to hear from Liam Swallow, a youth from Mistissini High School, as he shares his earliest memory of Goose Break. He talks about spending time on the land with family — a time of learning, connection, and belonging. His story reminds us how being on the land helps pass on knowledge, traditions, and culture to the next generation. 

Before we continue, we’d like to highlight the Advanced Indigenous Information and Communication Technologies program offered through the Cree School Board. This fully funded program prepares students for future studies and careers in the tech industry. It provides hands-on training, internships, and the skills needed to succeed in high-demand fields.

We’re also pleased to welcome Darlene Cheechoo, our new Deputy Director General (Adult and Higher Learning) for adult learners. She’ll share her vision and priorities, and how she plans to support learners at every stage.

The Higher Learning, Building Capacity Conference wrapped up this weekend in Ottawa.Students, educators, employers, and community partners came together to connect and build pathways for the future. We’ll hear from students about what the experience meant to them.

    March is Cree language month in Eeyou/Eenou Istchee. We are all encouraged to speak, read and learn to write in Cree. The Cree Language Commission is inviting people to participate in weekly activities promoting Cree Language this month.

    At the Cree School Board, we honour this month and dedicate it to all the Elders who took part in The Iyiyiuwayihtimuwin / Iinuuweyhtamuwin – Elder and Traditional Knowledge Keeper Teachings Video Project. It's a beautiful tribute to the wisdom they've shared with us over the years.

    You’ll hear teachings from Clymie Blackned Weistche from Waskaganish, Daniel and Mary Bosum from Ouje-Bougoumou, Lucy and Samson Petagumskum from Whapmagoostui, and Winnie Gull Saganash from Waswanipi who will share teachings to us.

We visited the majority of the communities, but we plan to return to Whapmagoostui, Ouje-Bougoumou, and Waswanipi soon! Dr. Sarah Pash, Chairperson, will speak about the Dialogue and Luncheon, and Caroline Mark, Director General, will speak about the Regional General Assembly Community Tour. There will also be speeches from the Deputy Director Generals and a brief presentation of our Strategic Action Plan and a new department called Eeyou Ihtuun.

Catherine Rutherford talks about the upcoming Special Needs Symposium to be held in Gatineau, QC, on November 29 to December 1, 2022. Juanita Gull completed her training in the Continuous Learning Journey from the Cree School Board and shared her recent trip to an AFN conference in Toronto.
