87: Reimagining Christianity - A Conversation on Doubt, Faith, and Mysticism with Dr. Robert Forman
In this episode, I talk with Dr. Robert Casey Forman — mysticism scholar, 12-time author, and spiritual explorer of 55+ years. His latest book, Christianity Reimagined, guides those navigating a spiritual shift or re-evaluating their faith.
We explore why doubt can deepen, not threaten, faith, and discuss mystical experiences — moments of presence and peace that transcend doctrine and appear across religions. Dr. Forman also addresses Christianity’s harms, the enduring beauty of ritual and community, and how we can reimagine a faith that honors intellect, humanity, and connection.
This honest, expansive conversation offers insight, compassion, and a path forward for anyone deconstructing, rebuilding, or curious about their spiritual journey.
In this episode, we discuss:
Doubt is not a failure of faith, it's the doorway to a deeper, more honest spirituality.
Mystical experiences are more common than we think.
You don’t have to abandon intellect to embrace faith.
Christianity can be reimagined in a way that is inclusive, compassionate, and non-dogmatic.
Ritual and community still have value — if they’re aligned with your growth.
You are allowed to keep the parts of Christianity that nourish you.
Jesus’ teachings on love, compassion, and presence remain powerful guides — even outside of traditional belief systems.
You can find (or create) a spiritual path that fits who you are today.
Who Is Dr. Robert K.C. Forman?
Dr. Robert K.C. Forman is a scholar, writer, and spiritual explorer whose work has shaped the study of mysticism and spirituality for decades. Growing up in Baltimore, he earned his BA from the University of Chicago and a PhD from Columbia University's Department of Religion, and that honorary doctorate from Sweden’s Lund University. He became a tenured professor at the City University of New York and pioneered The Perennial Psychology, a groundbreaking approach to mystical experience and religious writings. His eleven previous books, including The Problem of Pure Consciousness and Mysticism, Mind, Consciousness, remain influential classics, earning him an honorary doctorate from Sweden’s Lund University.
After retiring, Dr. Forman founded the interfaith Forge Institute for Spirituality and Social Change, which united leaders across the full range of spiritual and religious traditions for mutual work and support. A lifelong practitioner and certified teacher of Transcendental Meditation, he chronicled his spiritual journey in Enlightenment Ain’t What It’s Cracked Up to Be. Recently, an unexpected shift led him to nine years of weekly church attendance, inspiring his latest book, Christianity Reimagined: A Mystical Approach for Doubters and the Dubious, which explores how liturgy and community can deeply move both believers as well as the confused, the doubting and even the skeptical.

The Sacred Victim’s Journey - Transforming Pain Into Empowerment With Miriam Pires
In this episode of A Soulful Rebellion, I sit down with Miriam Pires as she shares her powerful journey—growing up in a high-control cult and ultimately finding her voice as an advocate for personal empowerment and healing. Together, we explore the complexities of navigating trauma, the difficult path of leaving a toxic environment, and the idea of the sacred victim’s journey as a way to reclaim dignity and strength after abuse.
I also reflect on my own experiences and offer insights into what it means to move from victimhood to empowerment and self-love. Reclaiming our narrative around victimhood is not just healing—it’s liberating.
Throughout our conversation, I emphasize how societal constructs can hold us back from fully healing and how shifting our perspective can help us see our strength and resilience. We also talk about the essential role of community, support, and personal practices in the ongoing journey of healing.

67: Redefining Salvation Beyond Traditional Christianity: A Conversation About The Mystic Jesus With Marianne Williamson
In this enlightening episode, I had a conversation with the renowned spiritual leader and bestselling author, Marianne Williamson, to explore the deep themes of love, fear, and empowerment. Marianne shares insights from her decades of experience in spiritually progressive movements, her groundbreaking books, and her vision for a more compassionate and loving world.
Highlights From This Episode:
- Redefining Salvation: The discussion contrasts the traditional Christian view of salvation (focused on inherent sinfulness and redemption through Jesus) with a more mystical interpretation that emphasizes inherent innocence and the need for a change in thought rather than punishment.
- Our Inherent Innocence: Marianne highlights the idea that humans are inherently innocent, created by God as extensions of love. This contrasts sharply with the traditional belief in original sin and the need for redemption.
- The Holy Spirit As Guidance from Within: The conversation emphasizes that God provides the Holy Spirit as a means to navigate life’s challenges. The Holy Spirit helps individuals correct their thoughts and find love in their experiences.
- The Power of Forgiveness: Marianne discusses the significance of forgiveness and the power of prayer. They emphasize that being willing to see others differently can lead to personal transformation and healing.
- The Practical Application of Spiritual Teachings: Marianne explains that true spiritual growth comes from applying the principles learned in spiritual texts (like A Course in Miracles) in everyday life. This requires moving from intellectual understanding to heartfelt action.
- Community and Connection: The conversation touches on the importance of being surrounded by others who are also seeking spiritual growth. It stresses that connection with others can help individuals stay aligned with their purpose and values.
- Choosing Love Over Fear: The closing discussion encourages listeners to make conscious choices that align with love rather than fear, promoting the idea that individuals can create a "heaven on earth" through their thoughts and actions.
Marianne Williamson's Latest Book: The Mystic Jesus: The Mind of Love – Available online and at bookstores everywhere.
